Your cycling jacket for winter weather.

If you're accustomed to wearing your ski jacket during a winter ride, by all means, proceed. But, if you want something that's flattering, functional, and lightweight, the Giordana FormaRed Carbon Women's Jacket is for you. With more technical features than your car, and a cut that eliminates bulk without being restricting, the FR-C Jacket is the logical choice for your wardrobe this winter.

To create a protective layer at a climate range below freezing, Giordana used multiple layers to form the FormaRed Carbon jacket. Each section of the jacket serves a specific function, and their careful selection ultimately avoids a bulky design. Starting with the outer layer, Giordana used a high-density material that looks and feels like a lighter, more malleable version of soft shell. While adding to the overall insulation, the fabric uses a tight, spiral weave to serve its primary function -- moisture transfer and evaporation. Sound out of place? Well, think of the entire jacket working like an ecosystem, with multiple elements working in harmony towards symbiosis. Directly under the outer-layer is a regulating membrane that's constructed from the patented WindTex fabric. WindTex provides a complete protection from intruding elements while still allowing escaping vapor and heat to pass to the outer surface. This characteristic is further enhanced through the addition of doubled, Super Roubaix wrist cuffs. The jacket also has a heightened neck with an inner-sleeve to fight the cold.

So, we have our regulatory layers, but aside from keeping the icy wind out, what's keeping you warm? Well, that would be innermost layer of the FR-C jacket. Made from a soft, breathable polypropylene (similar in makeup to polyester), the fabric insulates by retaining air close to the surface of the skin. As you ride, your rising core temperature heats this air, and the jacket creates a warming insulation layer. With assistance from the other breathing fabrics, FormaRed allows excess heat to escape and creates a consistent internal temperature. Equally important, the soft-pile inner-fabric pulls moisture from the skin to keep you riding dry, because you can't stay warm when you're wet. Remarkably, all of this is achieved within a construction that feels more like a long sleeve jersey than a jacket.

With a multi-panel, minimally seamed design, the FR-C jacket features a slim cut while retaining a full range of motion. Accent panels have been strategically placed around the jacket to ensure this, but they also double as ventilation ports. For on-the-fly ventilation, Giordana included a full-length front zipper that's been reinforced from the elements with a Aerofix AVTM inner-flap. This means that when the zipper is closed, no chilly drafts are going to infiltrate the body of the jacket. Giordana also added three rear pockets, a zippered compartment, and reflective piping for low-light conditions.

The Giordana FormaRed Carbon Women's Jacket is available in the colors Black/black, Purple/white/black, and White/black and in five sizes from X-Small to X-Large.

Fits way small

  • Fit: Runs small
  • Size Bought: Large

I'm bummed as this is truly a beautiful jacket and well made. It fits tight through the shoulders, even when leaning forward over the bike, and is way too tight through the chest. Granted I am a 36D, but I also ordered a Giordana long sleeve jersey in L and it is a tad loose. Definitely could not layer under this for cold weather, so guess I'll have to return. Too bad because I love everything else about it. I buy M in most tops.

Perfect for cold mornings

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I live in southern Arizona. In the winter the mornings are in the mid 30s to mid 40s so I needed a jacket to stay warm on the bike. I had bought other Giordana apparel and love the way it is made and performs. This jacket is no exception: really well constructed with a couple of handy zippered pockets and with a thermal layer underneath, quite warm. The coldest weather I wore it in was the high 30s.

Everyone needs this jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This jacket is my absolute go to for winter, late fall and spring riding. A medium fits me LIKE A GLOVE (I am 5'11'' 145lbs with a 36b chest). I love the soft fabric and I like how the jersey pockets go up really high to keep everything tucked in there. The jacket also has nice side vents which you can kind of see in the photo but they are on the sides of the jacket and are nice to open up for a little extra ventilation. The sleeve cuffs are really nice almost like a wetsuit cuff that are really nice and wrist hugging to keep that pesky wind out. I have worn this jacket in 28* weather with a long sleeve base layer underneath and up to about 50* with a short sleeve base layer (50* was about the warmest I would wear this jacket- I was definitely sweating a bit). The fit is really rad, nice and form fitting and the paneling is perfect for a nice trim cut. I've also worn this in light to moderate rain and it holds up SO WELL. Like seriously took my jacket off after the ride and was completely dry. All ladies need this jacket!!!!

Below is a photo of me wearing the jacket riding in the wind/ rain up Emmigration Canyon in SLC. It was a cold day but this jacket kept me toasty warm. You can also see the side vents better in this photo than in the website photo.

Love this jacket

I've been biking for several years but still resist buying cycling-specific gear. However, I'm slowly getting on the bandwagon and this is my very first cycling jacket. I've only worn it once, but I fell in love and can't wait to wear it again. The fit was perfect--arms and back were long enough to keep me covered, extra room in the shoulders for leaning forward and a nice, soft material. It kept me warm in the shady, cool parts of the mountain and was extremely breathable in the hot, sunny spots. I overheat easily and didn't need to take this off. I have no idea what the temps were in the shade/sun but I'm guessing 60/80? It also started to sprinkle a bit, but not enough to get wet. This is snug but in a good way. I'll be able to fit a wool longsleeve baselayer underneath and that's about it. I'm very happy with this jacket and know that I'll use it a lot.

Nice Jacket

  • Fit: Runs small

It's lighter than expected, one thin layer with a soft brushed inside. "Winter Cycling" for Northern California, not mid-west or east coast. It kept me warm through the mid-40 degree rides and it moves well with layers on. I usually wear women's size 8 but in cycling clothes wear large. This jacket I needed XL and it's a race/snug fit.

Fabulous Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I purchased this jacket a month or so ago to use as an early spring/late fall cycle jacket. It is totally worth every penny. I am almost always cold, and no matter the gear i wear, find myself chilled when i ride below 45 degrees. This jacket has changed that. It's warming without being bulky. The pockets are placed well, and the zippered vents are easy to get to, even with full finger gloves on. I've worn it in 50 to 47'ish degree weather, and will try it out in colder weather soon. If you are in the market for a new cycle jacket, look no further.

I've switched to exclusively wearing Giordana FRC and this jacket lives up to the rest of the line. First, I love that Giordana doesn't sacrifice style and quality in its women's line, unlike most other brands that don't offer women's options in their highest end products. This jacket has all the bells and whistles of the men's version. Wore it in 40-degree weather with a baselayer and was toasty warm. The side vents are especially worth the extra money over the Silverline or Fusion jackets - as the day warmed up to about 55, I unzipped the vents and the jacket regulated temperature perfectly. Has three nicely sized pockets plus a zip pocket on the back, AND an iphone pocket on the front inside chest. Sizing tip -- the shoulders run small because of the jacket's windproof fabic, which is less stretchy and flexible than normal jersey fabric. I wear a small Giordana jersey but have wider shoulders than your average size small, so I had to size up to a medium in this jacket for range of motion.

Worth every penny.

I broke in this jacket yesterday, on a ride that started in the 40's and ended in the (low) 60's. It kept me warm when it was colder, and breathed beautifully as the temperatures rose. I never felt too cold -- or too warm! The side vents really work, as did the overall design of the jacket. It stayed down over my hips - no pulling or tugging to keep down in back - and I didn't notice it all day, which means there was no pinching, or poking, or uncomfortable seams anywhere. There are plenty of pockets, and the purple color is just gorgeous. I'm 5'7" and 120#, and I ordered the small ... good fit, but I do have narrow shoulders. Definitely a keeper!

Worth every penny.

Love it, too, and looks great on you!

Don't forget to get the matching F.R.C. tights (when available), you'll love them...they, I think, are truly a step above in quality and performance, than all the other brands...and they look great on.

F.R.C. Jacket & F.R.C. Tights

Perfect at wind-blocking, right up there with Gore's *Windstopper. Warm, too.

(the parts of each garment that 'appears' a little glossy, isn't really...those are the sections that have a carbon fiber look...VERY COOL.

F.R.C. Jacket & F.R.C. Tights

Close-up of side vents & rear zip pocket

Nicely appointed jacket with sharp cutting-edge the carbon-look detail on both the jacket & tights (I ordered Oakley Custom 'Path' with the carbon-look frame, so very cool).

Don't have the best camera, hope you can make out the details anyway!

Close-up of side vents & rear zip pocket

Cozy Interior F.R.C. Jacket

Rather 'plush' interior helps keep you warm, coupled with a good base layer, and the F.R.C. jersey, and you're good to go!

(The red areas inside are the 'vents').

*also recommend the Universal SO Thermal cap by Gore!

Cozy Interior F.R.C. Jacket

Nice jacket

    Love this jacket!

Get the FR-C tights for this coming fall/winter, if you haven't already got them; they are excellent: great wind protection and very warm and breathable. Plus, they are awesome in person with a great fit; and they match the jacket. And, on Sale at this posting. Recommend this combo to all while they're still available (I really wish I could get the Purple jacket in my size, too...maybe next fall!).

    Performance & Style...You're Worth It!

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small

Absolutly love it! Not mentioned in the description is that it also has a small zip-vents on either side (not under the arm pits, but just below), nice extra touch! It does have a slim fit, thanks to the previous reviewer, I went up a fits perfectly (I'm not a small gal, 5'6"), and as she said, the overall length is perfect, even the sleeve length (which is always a problem; that and shoulders). Cuts the wind. The overall quality and attention to detail is outstanding and worth the price (better if on sale, of course!). Functional, stylish, sexy (for bike clothes)...Italian!

*UP-DATE: Weather here has been crazy; needing either my Gore ALP-X GT; and sometimes a warm jacket...this is still the warm jacket I reach for & Loving It!

Bought this jacket on sale a couple of years ago. It is absolutely amazing. Beautifully made and fits like a glove. I just need a bigger size, since the shoulders run a bit small. This is the absolute best women's jacket I have ever worn. The sleeve and torso length is perfect (I'm 5'7" and got a medium) and the pockets actually hold my winter riding extras. Oh, and it looks great also!! I will definitely buy another - one size larger - when they come on sale :)
