Description

Fine-tuned for trail dominance.

Seeing the previous 34 Float Fork is already incredibly capable, it's surprising that FOX engineers tweaked its internals to produce a more sensitive fork across chunky rocks and momentum-sapping roots. The 2018 iteration of the FOX 34 Float 29 120 3Pos-Adj FIT4 Fork (51mm Rake) sports a new damper tune with a reconfigured shim stack that increases its small-bump sensitivity. Following suit in the sensitivity department, FOX revised the Float air spring with EVOL technology, which is borrowed from rear shocks to make the fork even more  supple over trail imperfections by requiring less initial force to initiate its travel.

The 34 Float ideally matches the balanced feel of your 29er trail rig with its 34-milimeter stanchions. 34-millimeter stanchions are lighter than the burlier offerings of the 36 Float, yet they retain a high level of stiffness for precise tracking across the rough stuff. This means you'll have a reliable, smooth fork that's composed over hectic sections of technical terrain, but without sacrificing efficiency on steep climbs and long-mileage adventures in the backcountry. This specific 34 Float is the top-shelf Factory Version with Kashima-coated stanchions for greater sensitivity to small bumps, as well as a 51-millimeter rake for nimbler 29er handling at slow speeds.

The big story with the 34 Float is the Fit4 damper with its 3-position adjust. Something to note, the damper's reconfigured shim stack makes it easier than ever to add or remove volume spacers by eliminating a seal in its design. With the 3-poition adjust, you can swap between Open, Medium, and Firm settings on-the-fly for quick adjustments to the terrain at hand. Open mode gives you 22 clicks of low-speed compression tuning for getting its feel just right. Medium is great for extended climbs and smoother trail sections where greater efficiency is a welcome relief to excess bobbing. And when you're seeking a practical lock-out on the road, the Firm setting is a huge help for pedaling back to the car along the highway or grinding up long fire roads.

  • FOX's flagship trail fork reconfigured for sensitivity
  • Fit4 damper with 3-position adjust: Open, Medium, Firm
  • FLOAT air spring with EVOL for small-bump compliance

Fox Float 120

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I ride an XC 29ER and recently switched out my Fox 32 100mm for the Fox 34 120mm fork. The fork is significantly better for only 20mm difference. Way more plush, eats up small bumps and cobbles, and no more numb hands on long descents. the weight penalty was next to nothing. A few adjustments with the spacers under your stem and you wont even notice any change in position. Bike now climbs like an XC racer and descends like a trail bike. Awesome fork, I wish i switched it out sooner.
