The reworked air spring, new damping system, low travel, and overall lower weight of FOX Racing Shox's 32 Float 29 100 3Pos-Adj FIT4 Fork all conspire to eliminate any excuses for taking it easy once you hit the trailhead. That's not to say you won't enjoy yourself on an easy spin through your local singletrack loop, but — given the 32 Float's propensity for speed — we doubt you'll be at cruising tempo for long.
In addition to a few tweaks to structural minutia, the biggest change featured on the new 32 Float is that the Float Air Spring at its heart is now dual-chambered and self-equalizing. Gone is the negative coil of old, which makes for weight savings that take full advantage of the stanchions' reduced bulk. The air spring also enjoys an improvement in small bump compliance over its predecessor because it requires less force to induce travel. If you want the fork to ramp-up harder, you can customize the spring's compression curve with internal spacers to fit the 32 Float to your specific tastes; however, we should note that this particular model doesn't include the spacers.
While the new air spring and lighter chassis are the key material changes, the new model year's Fit4 damper adjustment system represents a change in functional philosophy. Gone are the overly prescriptive Climb, Trail, and Descend settings of CTD. Instead, the new 3-position Fit4 system toggles between the more descriptive Firm, Medium, and Open settings in a move that — as the name suggests — better fits the fork's function to on-trial situations. While this change may read like an exercise in semantics, it actually entails a radical realignment of the 32 Float's capabilities.
The new Open setting sees the biggest change, expanding to encompass the range once divided between Descend and Trail. The damper's 22 adjustable sub settings are now distributed across the more inclusive Open setting instead of limited to the previous Trail settings. This lets you keep the front end's short travel wide open in order to take full advantage of the fork's high-riding tendencies and the natural speed of 29ers, combining better small-bump compliance with more confident tracking across successive impacts and rough terrain.
The Medium setting is much firmer than the Trail setting was, handling duties ranging from fast trails to lumpy climbs, and the Firm lockout setting returns as the ideal platform for fire road transition or sprinting when the finish line beckons.
