The top Campy groups have seen a pretty big redesign across most of their drivetrains, but one area that stayed largely untouched is the Campagnolo Super Record 11 Cassette. The cassette's most immediately apparent feature is the mix of six lightweight titanium sprockets and five nickel/chrome-coated steel sprockets. Compared to Record's mix of three to eight, this nets Super Record a weight savings of 224 grams. Campagnolo doesn't offer a full titanium cassette for a couple of reasons. First, the highest five cogs are the smallest, so the weight savings derived from changing doesn't justify the additional expense. Titanium is also softer, so it wears faster. Since smaller cogs get more chain on more of their bodies more of the time, the small Ti cogs would wear out incredibly fast. By going with a steel/Ti mix with the Super Record 11 cassette, Campagnolo provides you the best combination of weight savings, durability, and cost.
The low weight of the Super Record 11 cassette isn't just a function of the 6 Ti cogs. These 6 cogs are held together in 2 groups of 3, with each group riveted together by a splined aluminum "frame." These frames save weight and add to the overall increase in torsional stiffness you'll experience with the Super Record 11 cassette.
In the end, though, cassettes are all about smooth shifting, which Super Record has in spades courtesy of Ultra Shift technology. Ultra Shift boils down to tooth shape, which you'll notice primarily in the form of sharkfin-like teeth spread across the cogs. This shape serves as a gateway for upshifts that guides the chain while relieving pressure on both it, the rear derailleur, and the cassette itself. According to Campagnolo, Ultra Shift requires 13% less effort to achieve rear derailleur shifts in comparison to pre-Ultra Shift, and the increased longevity is something that will prove itself over time. A long, long time.
The Campagnolo Super Record 11 cassette comes with a lightweight alloy lockring. It's available in an expanded range of ratios: 11-23, 11-25, 11-27, 11-29, 12-25, 12-27, and 12-29.
