Using its lauded and medal winning (gold and bronze in triathlon at the '12 games) AiR frame, Boardman has created a mid-level, race-ready bike that will get you to the finish line fast. Years of expertise in racing against the clock have given Boardman a unique perspective into the technology and aerodynamics necessary to create a bike that slips through the wind. The AiR 9.2 uses the same frame as its sister, the AiR 9.8, but with an economical Ultegra 11-speed component package.
Given Boardman's personal race resume, which includes breaking the hour record three times, it seems logical that he insists every tube on the AiR be examined and tuned to the most efficient shape possible. Boardman carefully designed the AiR's tubes with shapes that not only effectively handle head-on winds, but also those less-than-ideal crosswinds that are encountered in racing situations. These wind-tunnel-tested tubes feature a fairly slender width profile throughout, which creates the optimal balance between vertical compliance and aerodynamics. The top tube remains fairly round, while the down tube, seat tube, and integrated seatpost have been shaped to maximize airflow and reduce wind resistance. The material selected for the AiR's frame is a high modulus unidirectional carbon fiber, constructed with a full monocoque design. Similarly, the fork was built out of the same predictable, race-tested, and ultralight carbon fiber as the frame.
The AiR's fork was designed to be exceptionally stable, comfortable, and to efficiently handle variable wind conditions. Boardman factored in the proximity and spinning of the front wheel, which affect the fork's ability to reduce wind-resistance. To this end, the blades were computer modeled to manage that challenging local flow condition. Because of this, Boardman flattened the insides of the blades and curved the outside surfaces for an enhanced airflow interaction between the fork and wheel. This same principle is also true for the seatstays, which is why they feature a similar profile. The frame was built with full internal cable routing, furthering airflow enhancement and a clean overall appearance.
The AiR mold now incorporates a one-piece PF30 bottom bracket and oversized box section chainstays, developed by Boardman. These have a steep taper design at the dropouts to maximize power transfer and strength at the rear junction. It keeps your wheels on the ground and your power moving you forward. To assist, the full carbon fork was built with a 1-1/2 to 1-1/8in tapered steerer for increased stiffness and steering precision.
The AiR 9.2 is built with a full complement of Shimano Ultegra 11-speed components. The entire drivetrain, including the crankset is Ultegra. It features a compact crankset (50/34t) paired with an 11-25t cassette, which makes it perfect for hilly rides or races. The AiR 9.2 rolls on a Mavic Cosmic Elite Wheelset with Continental Ultra Race tires. The cockpit is built with proprietary Boardman Elite Alloy handlebar, stem, and AiR Carbon seatpost with 4-position clamp. You rest comfortably on a Fi'zi:k Ardea saddle.
The AiR 9.2 Complete Bike is available in five sizes from X-Small to X-Large and in color Silver.
