Why We Like The Speedplay Easy Tension Cleat

The Speedplay Easy Tension Cleat is an easy-to-use cleat platform for everyday trainers. New to this design, the cleat provides ease of access to adjusting the amount of float on the pedal. Cleats is cleats

Familiarity:

Okay, what can you say. These fit speedplay pedals and are rather generic. Why replace cleats? Well, if the circular clip in the cleat breaks (with age) it can jam into the pedal and make your shoe stuck. Now, you always have the other pedal to get 'unclipped' but these cleats do wear out.

A plus and minus

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I’m a long termed speedplay user- road and mountain bike. These cleats have the benefit of being much easier to clip in and out of- Which is a common complaint with speedplay zeros. The easy in/out has a downside though. The range of movement is narrower than on the standard cleats. As such, if you swivel a little more than the range you can accidentally unclip. This happened in a fast paced group ride when I was putting a lot of force into my pedals. Not cool- Made me swerve a bit as my foot came out. Thankfully i have several bike shoes with the standard zero cleats - so I don’t wear the shoes with these cleats to group rides or during HIT training intervals where they might disengage. So these are ying and yang cleats- great ease of clipping in and out and honestly have not disengaged during normal rides. So they are ideal for most of the rides most people will do. I’d just be careful with them if you’re going to do some hard effort work or spirited group rides or racing

So, so much better than the old ones

Sometimes in the past, I had to use an ample supply of lube to make my Speedplay cleats work well. Not with the new gray model. These are a huge improvement. Huge.

Some good and some not so good

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

First the good. A cheaper option than the previous versions of the Speedplay cleats and just as good. Clipping in and out is a bit easier and seems just as secure as the old version of the cleat. The bad- one of the float adjustment screws was frozen and no amount of penetrating oil, torque on the screw driver, or pliers would budge it. I ended up stripping the head on the screw and still would not move. At this point since I'd mounted the cleat I emailed Wahoo and they sent me a new set of cleats after I sent pics of the problem and proof of purchase. Their costumer service is another plus here. Word to the wise, make sure those float screws work before you mount the cleats on your shoes. I've never had this happen in all the years I've used Speedpay, but I will follow my advice in the future.

Finally --- They Got It Right

The Easy Tension Cleats actually are easy to get in and out --- FINALLY!!! These are the best cleats Speed Play offers and also the best price. I tried original Speed Play cleat in 2016 and they were almost impossible to like. Very difficult to clip in and clip out, so I went back to Shimano. Really glad I tried them again, and highly recommend --- ended my burning feet pain almost immediately.

I had a pair of original Speedplay Zero pedals but after back surgery for herniated disc I did not have the hip strength to clip out of my left pedal. These are easier to clip out of, and would buy again. I like the integrated rubber covers to make walking easier.

Easy to click in

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

My new Wahoo Speedplay Zeros came with the standard tension cleats. These cleats presented as quite stiff, too hard to click in consistently for me. So, I made the decision to purchase the easy tension cleats , although this boosted the total cost of the speedplay system. I am glad that I did as the easy tension cleat performs flawlessly and feels secure. They are also easier to click out of, another aspect that makes riding better with this system. I wish that Wahoo would include the extra buddies that help keep dirt and foreign matter from the essential parts, springs, etc. These plugs are important and very hard to find.

Lube required

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Says right on the base plate cover to use Dry Lube. If you don't the cleat gets sticky and you have to use excessive force to disconnect. It's a surprise and disconcerting when that happens.
