Description

Metron 40 SL Clincher Wheelset

Deep section wheels slice through the air easier, letting you ride faster with less effort, period. Problem is, deeper wheels are generally heavier, however, utilizing carbon fiber mitigates this significantly, but then that jacks up the price. Even so, deep-dish carbon is usually the silver bullet, providing an aero benefit, lightning the load, and offering boatloads of stiffness, but their exorbitant price keeps many riders from owning a set. That's not always the case though, and Vision's excellent Metron 40 SL Clincher Wheelset provides World Tour-proven performance at a relatively affordable package. Using a refined airfoil shape, the wind stays better attached to the rim which creates less turbulence and drag in its wake.

Sitting at 40mm deep and 25mm wide, the Metron's CFD and wind tunnel-aided rim shape holds speed better in the pack or in a breakaway and are aerodynamically optimized for 25mm rubber. By closely matching the tire width to the rim's external width, the air wants to stay attached to the rim contributing to less pressure buildup behind the trailing edge. Further aerodynamic touches come from the straight pull bladed spokes threading into durable ABS self-locking brass nipples and optimized shaping of its hubs. We also like the 40's as its depth puts it in a sweet spot of aerodynamics without being a handful in blustery, crosswind days and keeps its fighting weight low enough for lumpy rides and even some serious climbing. Of course, they're plenty durable enough for everyday use as well.

Vision builds these wheels by hand and laces it radial up front and in an asymmetric 2:1 pattern out back. By doubling up the spokes on the drive side, not only does it help improve the power transfer, but by reducing the number of spokes on the non-drive side, the spoke tension is higher, better balancing the spoke tension differential that’s inherent in dishing the rear wheel to accommodate a cassette on its Shimano/SRAM 11-speed road alloy freehub body. To ensure smooth spinning for several seasons, the hubs are fitted with 6 sealed cartridge bearings and the large, 17mm front axle ensures proper stiffness and sure tracking. And unlike sketchy carbon braking of old, the Metron 40 features a laser-etched micro-dot brake surface texture that improves braking performance in all weather conditions.

Are you able to safely run 23mm tires on these wheels?

Hi Andrew, you can run 23mm tires just fine on these wheels. 25mm wide tires will be a bit more aerodynamic at the tire to rim transition.
