Item # TRP000HAdapt to the times.
Times were that a new standard in cycling tech warranted an entirely new bike. That's still the case with some things (axle types, we're looking at you), but TRP's HY/RD Flat Mount Disc Brake Caliper bumps a standard set of cable brake levers up to hydraulic disc functionality. The caliper is compatible with most current generations of cable-actuated Shimano and SRAM shift/brake levers, so chances are good that it already works with your current drivetrain.
The calipers relocate the hydraulic reservoir from the levers to the brake itself, reducing cockpit clutter and keeping the hoods nice and sleek. The HY/RD features automatic pad wear adjustment so braking is always consistent and it uses pads that are compatible with Shimano M525/M515 brakes, so replacements are always easy to find.
The HY/RD comes with semi-metallic pads that work well in dry conditions but may wear quickly in wet/muddy conditions. If you plan on CX riding an upgrade to full metallic is recommended, but they will be slightly louder. You can chose 160mm or 140mm rotors, though TRP recommends always running 160 up front.
- Disc brake calipers that keep cable levers relevant
- Flat-mount design better suited to road, 'cross, and gravel
- Compatible with all existing cable-actuated systems
- Hydraulic mechanism located at the caliper
- Automatic pad wear adjustment
- Uses pads compatible with Shimano M525/M515 brakes

Just the caliper - nothing else
- Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Consider this a PSA: Unlike the TRP Hy/Rd Post Mount version, this package only contains the caliper. It does not include the 140/160mm adapter needed for the front fork of most road bikes. It also does not include a rotor. Caliper only.
Note that I called Competitive before I placed the order and was told that both were included. Fortunately, I was skeptical, and ordered the adapter directly from TRP (the only place I've been able to find them). Hopefully CC will update the description of this item, and get these adapters in stock so they can be ordered together as needed.
Edit to add: Also, be aware, these calipers are HUGE. Particularly in height. They do not clear the seat stay on the bike I'm wanting to use them on. Be sure to do your due diligence on these before committing.
Excellent points made. Very informative. Is that a dropped seatstay rear end on your bike? What make/ model bicycle is pictured?
