While it took SRAM a little longer than some third-party manufacturers, the Illinois-based manufacturer eventually got around to releasing direct mount options for its revolutionary one-by drivetrain. If the XX1 GXP Direct Mount Crankset is to be taken as a representative sample, then we're confident that the wait was worth it. While we won't pass judgment on their eight-legged namesake, we're more than happy to see our cranksets' spiders go.
Featuring the same lightweight, carbon stiffness of the normal XX1 cranks, but without the additional weight of the aluminum spider, the direct mount version gives you the option of quickly subbing different sizes of rings for different shapes of terrain. The generous width of the 168 Q-factor adds an additional layer to this crank's versatility. It's worth noting that the big redesign was in the crank arm/chainring interface, so the X-Sync design's alternating wide/narrow teeth with tall, square edges returns unchanged for the same early, confident engagement.
The XX1 GXP Direct Mount Crankset is compatible with GXP bottom brackets and, since the chainring attaches directly to the crank arms' spindle, it isn't compatible with direct-mount chain rings designed for a larger BB30 spindle.
