In a discipline that makes its name tackling the roughest terrain possible at racing speeds, minimizing the number of moving parts that can fail is a capital-g Good thing. It's little wonder, then, that SRAM's 1X drivetrains have become so popular. Given its position in SRAM's groupset hierarchy, the X1 1000 GXP Crankset is usually the gateway drug for any burgeoning 1x11 addiction.
The 1000 enjoys many of the benefits found in the lighter and more expensive 1200 and 1400 models, but at a price point that appeals to those of us who aren't sponsored. The crankset relies on the proven GXP bottom bracket, which is a sealed design that reduces weight and, more importantly, friction.
This crankset's real significance, however, is its single chainring. The simplicity of a single ring up front appeals to us on so many levels, including half the maintenance of a two-derailleur drivetrain, lower weight, and a romantic appeal to cycling's bygone era when cranks didn't come in sets. The taller, squared-off teeth grab the chain earlier and the sharper teeth keep the chain from bouncing off. The 1000 also benefits from the mud-clearing design used across the X1 line.
The SRAM X1 1000 GXP Crankset is available with 170 and 175 millimeter crankarms and with a 32-tooth ring.
