Continuing its tradition of perpetual improvement via incremental refinements, SRAM releases the X01 Type 2.1 Rear Derailleur. Nearly identical in function, weight, and performance to the original, small improvements were made to the derailleur's clutch mechanism and bearings to improve overall performance and longevity, so even if you don't feel the difference right away, you certainly will with time.

The same technologies that make the XX1 rear derailleur so excellent are available in the less-expensive X01. You'll also find bits like SRAM's Roller Bearing Clutch that decreases chain-slap, and its Cage Lock technology that makes removing and replacing the rear wheel a breeze. The proprietary X-HORIZON design makes all SRAM 1x derailleurs unlike typical derailleurs. Most derailleurs are designed such that the knuckle is slanted, versus the side-to-side motion of the X01, which limits the movement to the horizontal axis and makes ghost shifting nonexistent. An offset upper-pulley wheel is also unusual in the design, providing a constant chain-gap through all gear ratios to keep chain tension uniform so prevent binding and slapping. Speaking of, with the combination of the X-SYNC chainring, pulley wheels, and a Roller Bearing Clutch, a chain guide isn't needed with X01. In fact, the chain is tensioned with the derailleur and locked in place with the pulleys and chainring, effectively making dropped chains and missed shifts things of the past.

The Cage Lock technology on the X-HORIZON derailleur adds convenience to your bike maintenance, too. While either installing a new chain, swapping tires, or changing a flat on the trail, you're able to lock your derailleur in place for easy adjustments. Just push the cage forward to create some slack, and lock it into place while you work on your bike. No extra tools are required to make this happen, which makes trail emergencies where you need to remove your wheel a simple fix.

SRAM's X01 Type 2.1 Rear Derailleur is available in the colors Black and Red and is only compatible with SRAM 11-speed XX1, X01, or X1 drivetrains.

X01 is #1!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I have the XO1 group on both of my bikes. Shifting is spot on and the quality seems quite good. Something I do like in particular is that, the downshifts are very good. No need to push the lever past the click, unless you want to downshift more than one gear. My older Shimano XT is not nearly as crisp. I have actually had to get used to such accurate shifting. That is a good thing.

Unanswered Question

Can the SRAM X01 2.1 work with Shimano road shifters and an xtr
11-40 cassette? I am currently using a road link with a long arm ultegra to run my 11-40 cassette on my cyclo cross bike.

Simply awesome

First off I'll start by saying I'm not partial to Sram or Shimano. I own bikes with components from both companies. So what makes this different from a Shimano XT derailleur?

To start this derailleur is 20 grams lighter than an XT derailleur. Sure, that's not a huge weight savings for a derailleur that costs significantly more. However, this derailleur seems to shift quicker and more directly compared to it's counterpart. You also get the cage lock feature which makes installing and removing the rear wheel a snap.

While XT has the bargain advantage, I would say X01 has the performance and technology advantage. But if saving weight is your thing then you'll likely be considering this derailleur.

Make so much sense

Sure you might have to swap a handful of parts to make your drivetrain 11 speeds, including finding an XD driver for your current rear hub. But competitive cyclist has plenty of people to figure that out for you. And if you live around Salt Lake City, come see me in the retail store and I will even help you swap all of the parts. This derailleur is awesome because the clutch is plenty strong enough to keep enough chain tension to keep the chain from bouncing around, catching your frame and popping it of the front chainring. Especially when running a narrow-wide chainring. I also am a big fan on the button that holds the cage out of the way when taking the wheel on and off or just to get the chain back on if you biff it hard enough during a ride.

How is this different from the SRAM X01 DH 10 SPEED REAR DERAILLEUR? Is it primarily a difference in cage length? Are the jockey wheels smaller on this non-DH version? Thanks!

Thanks. The Specs. do not specify 1x10 or 1x11, although I now see the last sentence in the Description indicates 1x11.

It is different in the sense that it is a 11 speed rear derailleur and designed to work with an 11 speed shifter. The X01 DH is a 10 speed derailleur. They have a different pull. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Can't beat it

Very hard to tell a difference between this and XX1 rear. Crisp, clean, and precise shifting all up and down the cassette. The new b-knuckle helps it feel even more smooth. Much more distinct shifting compared to shimano, although they are both good systems.

The SRAM 1x11 system is outstanding. I love the simplicity of only shifting the rear derailleur along with reduced weight and accuracy. The X01 rear derailleur will keep your chain steady and works flawlessly and is highly recommended to complete your 1x11 group.

Smooth Shifting & Durable

While about 30 grams heavier than the XX1 derailleur, the shifting is just a crisp. With the extra weight comes a little more durability since it isn't made entirely of carbon. Definitely my go-to!

I converted to 1 x 11 and got this for the derailleur. It has not failed me yet. I initially bought a SRAM rear cassette, but it did,'t fit my hub, so switched to SHIMANO and had no problem.
