Force 22 GXP Crankset

While the announcement of 22 gears might draw most people's attention toward the new Force 22, we'd argue the biggest achievement of the new group was SRAM's generous carryover of Red's technology. The Force 22 GXP Crankset showcases this most clearly, as it was constructed with unidirectional carbon crank arms and received Red's hidden bolt pattern and innovative 'True 22' X Glide R chainring calibration, giving you the ultimate in drivetrain power and precision.

The new SRAM Force 22 GXP Crankset was built using unidirectional carbon in the crank arms, matched to a forged alloy spider. This design is similar to that which SRAM employed with its Red/Quarq design, and it now incorporates the spindle into the crankset's non-driveside arm. Because of its large carbon-optimizing structure, SRAM's crank arms are able to use less material, effectively reducing weight without negatively affecting stiffness. This also allowed them to rotate the spider to take advantage of the large, flex-fighting crank arm.

SRAM chose to stick with the 130mm bolt circle diameter standard, ensuring compatibility with aftermarket chainrings, but they've arranged the spider to position a mounting bolt on the backside of the crank arm. By integrating a mounting location within the existing carbon structure, they're able to reduce weight and deflection from shifting -- effectively enhancing the accuracy, speed, and quality of front shifts.

The Red Exogram chainrings have also trickled into Force 22. These rings received extensive reworking with the development of Red, which now boost front shifting performance, specifically focusing on integration with the rotating, Yaw-caged front derailleur. Coined X Glide R, these chainrings are machined from 5mm thick 7075-T6 aluminum and now have been carefully tuned to accommodate the 11-speed drivetrain. SRAM used extensive computer-aided finite element analysis to optimize stiffness first, followed by shift ramp profiles. Then they set out to eliminate any unnecessary material without affecting the structure. SRAM placed the new shift pins to correlate with your cadence and cut the ramps to into a profile that works seamlessly with the new Force front derailleur.

The Force 22 GXP Crankset does not come with a bottom bracket, but is compatible with the SRAM/Truvativ GXP standard, including the low-friction hybrid ceramic bearing option. It comes in 170, 172.5, and 175mm lengths, and both 53/39 and 50/34 chainring configurations are available.

    I bought this crankset to upgrade to a new bottom bracket. It has worked as expected and am very happy with it. I bought one for my wife about 2 years ago, and was very happy with it, so thought I would get one for myself. I have been very happy with it so far.

    Have been thinking of switching to a 50/34 for some time and finally saw this crank at a great price here on CC. Very happy with the product; installation was easy; and works flawlessly on my 10 speed setup. It's not quite like an e-bike for going up hills, but I've noticed the lower gearing up front has helped for the steep ones here in Northern California. I'm not missing the top end 53 either. Even riding with a group in a paceline has not been a problem on the 50. Happy in every respect! And the not to be missed: the crank just looks good!

    Changed a 50x34 to this 46x36, works well with 10 sp, minor adjustment to the front derailleur need to be moved down a bit. With and 11x36 cassette, as I said, great for gravel riding and some mountain courses.

    The Sram carbon road cranks are awesome. This crank looks great and is really light. I highly recommend it if you're looking to shave a few grams. Shifting is pristine and the crank doesn't weigh much less than Red. I made the switch from Ultegra.

    Can I install a Force 22 BB30 in a English threaded bike?

    Thanks for your question Darrin, sadly the BB30 uses a wider crank spindle and will not fit in an english threaded bottom bracket. While you can go from BB30 back down, you cann't go up to BB30. You can though get the Force 22 GXP and that will work with a GXP Threaded bottom bracket.
