Specialized also employed its scientifically tested Body Geometry to align your hip, knees, and feet for boosted power and reduced chance of injury. The footbed reduces hot spots by putting less pressure on nerves and arteries. A wedge underneath the footbed offers greater arch support, too. And for a little fashion with your function, Specialized integrated its custom S3 Boa dials; these CNC'd alloy dials add panache, precise micro-adjustment, and long-lasting durability. The titanium alloy cleat nuts rotate to position pedals and cleats with 5mm rearward.

Perfect for Gravel, Too stiff for Trail
- Familiarity:

I bought this shoe last fall (size 46, wide) and it fit REALLY well out of the gate (my foot dimensions are 293mm long, 105mm wide). I then had the custom head-mouldable insoles made for me at my LBS and that too the comfort up another notch (though the additional heel volume did make heel lift a bit more pronounced. Since then I've put on about 1500 miles on these shoes, on both Zwift and outdoor gravel rides, and I really like them, The tensioning mechanism is good, but on a wet, sanding gravel ride I noticed that the fine sand particles were getting into the BOA mechanism causing it to feel 'gritty'. I've since started using shoe-covers on really muddy/sandy rides and that solves the issue. I've tried these on mountain bike rides and I find them to be too stiff for trail riding... too much vibration was causing some toe pain and some blisters. I don't have this issue at all when riding gravel, YMMV. Overall I think these are the best shoes I've used, and they are my new benchmark for gravel shoes.

Perfect but for the tongue
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I've ridden Specialized S-Works shoes for years. Over the last 18 months, I purchased the S-Works S7's and Ares (both road shoes) and these S-Works Recons (XC/gravel). The tongue on both the S7s and Recons takes awhile to break in. Until it does, the shoes are pretty uncomfortable and the top of the tongue digs into your ankle. The S7's broke in after 8-10 hours but the Recons are taking forever. I'm a few hundred miles into the Recons and the tongue is still as firm as ever and killing the front of my ankle. Not sure why the tongue on the Recons is so stubborn. If the S7's are any indicator, these Recons will be perfect once the tongue breaks in. As a quick aside the Ares broke in on the first ride but they're not as good looking as the S7's or Recons. I sided up the Ares by a half size compared to the S7's and Recons, both of which are true to size.

Fabulous shoe for gravel
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times

I have struggled to find a wide shoe that works with my feet -- high arch, high volume, moderately wide, and square. The Recon is a comfortable, high performance shoe and largely disappears, even when pushing hard on my gravel bike. I tried the Lake MX238 (recommended size was too short, heel slips, mid foot is excruciatingly uncomfortable, toe box is stiff, shoes are very heavy), Shimano RX8 Wide (too narrow and low volume-- the new last doesn't fit as well as the old last in the RP9), Sidi (Mega is too wide, regular is too narrow), and Vittoria (soft sole, hot spots/foot pain, poor tension control with the lacing system, collects rocks). The Recon, however, fits well, is light, and provides incredible power transfer. Even with the sloppy MTB pedal interface, the power transfer feels like my road setup. The built in wedge means I don't need to add one, saving space and adding comfort. The stiff sole has also improved the hot spot issues I have with other, softer shoes. This is a very refined shoe. I added the green Body Geometry SL footbeds for extra arch support. The extra volume of the footbeds does cause minor heel slippage. I have found a few minor issues with this shoe: no quick release with the boas (you must loosen tension and/or pop the wire off the inside Boa guid), some discomfort from the forward Boa, and the treads collect rocks (like most MTB shoes).
