Why We Like The S-Works 7 Vent Road Cycling Shoe

The Specialized S-Works 7 Vent Road Cycling Shoe is one of those pieces of art that doesn't have to bid for your attention — it just knows it has it. The 7 Vent doesn't hide its intent either, as it takes all the superpowers of the S-Works 7 and adds precision airflow through strategically vented channels. Designed for peak-summer rides that make every small creek on your route looks like a five-star resort, the 7 Vent layers Dyneema Mesh on the upper and tongue to provide cooling airflow and a stretch-resistant structure for optimal fit and power transfer. Specific to the 7 Vent is the Vented Mouthport, which mirrors a vehicle's front grill and ports air directly into the front of the toe box — which if you've ever had suffocated toes, you'll know how valuable this feature will be.

Specialized drops the — symbolic — bottom out of the 7 Vent with massive ports that set themselves apart from other vented soles on the market with not only mesh screening but also fully open ports to quickly shed heat buildup. Excellent stiffness from the FACT Powerline carbon removes any doubt about whether your watts are going to the pedals, and the 7 Vent begs for breakaway attempts and monster sprint efforts.

During those high-power efforts, the PadLock heel cradle and BOA S3-Snap dials keep your feet stable and comfortable. Specialized uses pro-peloton athletes' feedback and adds the hook-and-loop strap to the forefoot, which affords you a maximal range of fitting from ankle to toe.

Fell Apart Fast

Familiarity:

The mesh on the instep began to tear apart after about 2,000 km of riding. After about 6 months the internal plate that holds the cleat nuts cracked on both shoes. The material apparently corroded and cracked from sweat buildup after a few months of riding indoors on the Wahoo. The tear on the instep has expanded to a gaping hole. These are the crappiest quality pair of shoes I've had in 30+ years of cycling. I bought these at the LBS during the height of pandemic supply shortages. Unfortunately, I couldn't find Sidi in my size.

The best professional riding shoes!

These shoes are extra wide and oh so comfy! I have wide feet and have been frustrated with buying, then sending back, so called wide shoes that feel like my toes are being pinched as the toe box was so narrow. Not with these shoes, though. They are plenty wide in the toe box and they feel like you are wearing tennis shoes! Easy to adjust BOA system; the knobs are incredibly well engineered, doing away with that goofy pop up knob system of the past. I sleep in these shoes as so when I wake up, I am ready to ride my bike. No, just kidding! A really well designed and incredibly well engineered wide cycling shoes. Specialized manufactures only the best products. All hail Specialized!

Vent my frustration

Great shoe! Comfortable. Especially long rides. Disappointing in the look after riding and it started raining. After the ride the shoes looked like they were 10 years old vs 2 months. The vents turned gray, dirty looking. If you are going to pay $ 400.00 for shoes don’t ride with these in rainy weather, bad weather! They will look terrible ! Instead of a 400.00 pair of shoes they will look like a $20.00 pair of shoes! Beware if you happen to ride and it starts to rain!!

Hot Shoes Cool Feet (I'm punny)

If you want to spend $400+ on a pair of cycling shoes, you're spoiled for choice. Sidi, Shimano, Lake, Bont, Fizik, Bontrager, Giro, and countless others all make great shoes. Zeroing in on the right pair is tricky, and even though it's a good problem, it's still a problem. I do my best to review shoes on their objective merits. I can't guarantee that the S-Works, or any other shoe will play nicely with your feet. That being said, personal comfort aside, I think that these are the shoe to beat. I'd argue that based on 4 points. 1. These are as-stiff or stiffer than any shoe I've ever ridden (RC9, Shot, Empire, 402). 2. The Specialized-specific boas are hands-down better than anything else I've ever used 3. The dyneema vented upper is killer 4. The footbed can be adapted to fit your foot perfectly. One note would be that if you live in a 4 season climate, and these are going to be your only shoe, the normal S-Works 7 would probably be a better bet, since the vented upper would make it diffucult to keep your feet warm below 50-60 degrees. I should also specify that while I think these beat out Shimano's old S-Phyre (my historical favorite,) I haven't had a chance to ride the new 902s. That said, I can't imagine them being better than the S-Works. I really do believe that these are the shoes to beat today.

Vents are definitely better for hotter riding weather. Can be good for long distance triathlons as well. The Boa dials don't pop up for an easier transition though if it made a difference in your race time... you'd be sponsored ># If looking for a long distance road shoe for triathlon. Take a look at the Giro Imperial.
