Freeride ready.

The Sombrio V'al Women's Shorts are brand spanking new, but they combine a whole host of trail-tested designs in a freeride body that's made to handle everything from tough climbs to DH missions. Sombrio's Core Flex Dura, an abrasion-resistant and stretchy fabric, also comes treated with a water-repellent DWR finish that also serves to wick sweat away from your skin to keep you cool and dry. A seamless crotch panel provides mobility without irritation, and key seams are reinforced with bar tack stitching for extra durability.

At the waist, adjustable hook-and-loop tabs provide a customizable fit, and a locking zip fly, snap, and hook-and-loop patch provide a comfortable and easily adjustable closure. The hem is constructed to slide easily over pads without catching, and two zippered pockets at the front keep snacks, small tools, and cash within easy reach.

  • Core Flex Dura moves with you and resists abrasions
  • DWR finish resists light precipitation
  • Seamless crotch panel reduces irritation

How to Measure:
For best results, take measurements over your underwear.
Measure under your arms, around the fullest part of your chest.
Natural Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline, keeping the tape a bit loose.
Measure around the fullest part of your body at the top of your legs.
Using pants that fit well, measure the crotch seam to the bottom of the leg.

Not for me, but great for someone else.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

I struggled with the sizing on these because the medium fit nearly perfectly but felt tight at the crotch, while the large felt like it was WAY bigger. The quality felt solid on these and I would recommend this brand - but definitely try on if you are ever between sizes. I'm 5'9", 160 lbs and am often between a medium and large.

Love These Shorts

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I went through multiple pair of other shorts trying to find some that did not rise up on the leg so much and these shorts have the perfect inseam. They are very comfortable and have plenty of room for a liner.

Great short-

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: Large

I bought these in a large because I owned the Sombrio Summit shorts in Larges and these shorts were just a bit bigger and I wish I had gone down a size!

Nice short, terrible sizing variation

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Size Bought: medium and large

As with all MTB shorts I have tried (seems like almost all of them), I bought both the medium and large after reading reviews and stewing over the cost. Sizing variation is terrible. The medium was skin tight, while the large was huge even cinched all the way belt loops. I am a lifter and MTB'r so my legs are jacked. For reference: I am 5'7" and weight 165-170 lbs with body fat sitting around 15-18%ish and normally wear size 8-10 jeans. These were both returned.

13" inseam

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: True to size

I tried these on at the same time as the Sombrio Summit shorts. They seem to be the same length, and the Summit claims to be a 13" inseam.

These are a more abrasion resistant fabric, so a bit thicker vs the summit, and less stretch, but they are made to accommodate a curvy figure as needed (i.e. with the side waist adjustment tabs, gusseted crotch, etc) AND made to accommodate padded shorts underneath. I think these might run a touch larger than the summit shorts, and with the thicker fabric I found the Summit to be just a little bit more comfortable and better fit for my needs.

These would be great for accommodating pads underneath though, so keep that in mind! If you don't intend to wear pads, it sounds like you may want to size down, though in my case, I think sizing down would have been too small to pedal in. I could be wrong though?

I also like the design of these pockets over the summit. The openning is a little wider, and easier to get your hands in and out to access whatever you're storing in there.

A quick note on the green "Lapis" color above... it looks closer to a grass or true green in the photo, but in reality is more like a teal green. Personally I was hoping for a true green.

Overall, these are still great shorts if they fit your needs.

Love these shorts

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Size Bought: medium

I originally purchsaed a large in these shorts (I am a large in EVERY other pair of shorts) and they were enourmous. I sent them back and got a medium. The mediums fit great, and I look pretty good. They do not get in the way while I ride, they have zipper pockets, and they are simple. All around great shorts.

THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT. Sounds like we have the same build and I have been struggling to find good MTB shorts!

too long

these shorts are great and i wish so much the inseam wasn't so long. im 5'3 125lbs and ordered a small. everything fit but the shorts went past my knees. just too long for my liking

    Maybe mine were defective?

    • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
    • Fit: Runs small

I have and have tried on Sombrio shorts in the past, so I figured I knew my size, and was even looking forward to the looser/larger fit that other reviewers noted, but when I got these I couldn't even get them pulled up over my butt. It was a bummer since I liked the look and feel of the shorts.

    Legs are too baggy

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: small

I originally bought the XS but the waist was too tight so I returned them and ordered the small. I was really hopeful these were going to have a great fit but they failed me... the waist was perfect but the legs were sooo baggy that I had to return them. The material on the lighter pairs is also very thin and seems see through.

    Unanswered Question

    What is the inseam?

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: True to size

Great fit and highly durable for all types of riding. Have them in both colors. Make more like this Sombrio!

    Light and Airy

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XS

They run a little big (in my case). The velcro adjustments on the sides are a little funky, but overall I like the shorts. They breathe well.

Do you know what the inseam is on these shorts? I can't tell if they will be long enough for me. I'm 5'10" and prefer a longer short. Thanks!

Comment for Kris Eagle: I think the inseam is 13". I tried on these V'al shorts as well as the Summit shorts and they seem to be the same length. The Summit shorts say they are 13". The photos above are a bit confusing, I think the Orange photo is the most accurate of the 3. Here are the summit shorts for comparison, too. I decided to keep the summit, but both are great quality:

Do these have a chamois/liner attached?
