Why We Like The Trace MIPS Helmet
Smith's road helmet lineup has never been one to disappoint, and this year is no different, with the bar being moved a little higher once again with a new helmet in the mix — the Trace MIPS Helmet. This pinnacle helmet in the road collection features all of the tech you would expect from Smith, like its Koroud protection that fully surrounds the helmet to provide next-level protection, while teaming up with internal air channels so intake as much air, and keep your scalp feeling cool when you're challenging yourself up new climbs, and soaring down canyon roads. The Trace features 18 large vents that are strategically placed to create an intake and exhaust system, pulling cool air in, and giving it a quick escape in the back. And because those long rides also mean varying lighting conditions, Smith builds the Trace with an AirEvac system that works to keep your shades fog-free while riding, and vents that neatly secure your glasses when you need to take them off after dusk falls.

Excellent choice!
Very nice helmet, light, comfortable and well ventilated. Integrated bug screens are also much welcome.

Good Protection

I bought a second one for my son after using one for over a year. It is easy to adjust for fitting, has very good ventilation, is light weight, and works well with sunglasses. Seems it is more comfortable that lower priced, older helmets that I have used.

Fits extremely well, very adjustable.
Fits extremely well, very adjustable. Airflow could be better, but it never feels overly hot even on the warmest days.

Great helmet
Excellent fit. The chin strap design solves the irritating problem with older designs where the straps rub your ears. I am very pleased with the helmet.

SMITH Trace/Poppy-Terra-Storm
Trace seems to me is upgraded Overtake which I've had for some years. Please don't take my word but similarities are there. Very satisfied with Overtake except ventilation. Smith got it fixed with Trace even with glasses vents to eliminate fogging. That works well but I've not had a chance to test it on humid summer day. Downfall is that the helmet's front sits lower over glasses to make ventilation work but I've experienced bumping between helmet and glasses during rougher gravel ride. MTB ride was the same story but I can live with that. It is not a MTB helmet. Fits great just like Overtake. Love new improved straps. Highly recommend this lid.

So close to greatness, yet so far...
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
Ahh this helmet. It looks great -- good looking and well built, has multiple safety technologies built in, has a great fit out of the box and the fit adjustment is great too. It has a full coverage shell which I like as well. The hi-viz colorway is great. So many things to like about this helmet. But there is no padding on the mid-to-back underside of the shell that sits right on the top of my hairless head, maybe because of the MIPS insert. So the hard foam sits right on top of my head and gets compressed down into my head when the helmet is tightened. I could tell that is going to hurt on a long ride, so I had to send it back. I'm bummed, this helmet was so close to greatness but Smith dropped the ball on the padding. If Smith comes out with a new version of this helmet that has full padding all the way across the underside of the shell, I would buy that in a heartbeat.

I was tired of getting bees in the helmet so this one has some protection, with its honeycomb structuring. I think the strap could be a little better for my shape, but that's very individual, obviously.

Another one bites the dust after a fall.
I purchased this in December 2022. Had a crash on MTB trail flipping upside down landing on my head. Did break my neck, but the helmet saved my life. Tough helmet! Landed on hard dirt/sand in Northern California mountains. Purchased the Convoy and now purchasing the Engage. Great helmets!! I would like to add that I had a lot of trouble being able to tighten the straps by the ears. Never could figure that out. I stayed away from this design recently because of this. There are no instructions and I called to ask how to tighten these.
