There are some compelling reasons why the Tallboy 29er has flourished at the top of wish lists and sales charts since Santa Cruz rolled out its forebear in 2009. In addition to the 29in wheels and their big, aggressive angle of attack, the original Tallboy was one of the first 29ers to approximate the nimble dexterity of a 26in bike, sloughing off the myth of the ungainly 29er. A few minor changes and untold miles of shredded trail later, the 2016 Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon CC X01 Complete Mountain Bike returns with the same dexterity and surprisingly plush-yet-reactive four-inch platform of Virtual Pivot Point suspension.
The Tallboy's agile, forgiving geometry has been virtually unchanged since its inception; instead, any alterations to the frame were made with an eye toward saving weight and improving stiffness. These gains are owed primarily to Santa Cruz's inimitable Carbon CC frame construction, which features a higher modulus carbon than the Carbon C model, so less material is required to hit the same strength and stiffness numbers. The chassis is lighter, so fewer watts are required to propel it, and the increased stiffness means those watts are transferred more efficiently.
The frame's two carbon triangles are built as whole pieces rather than glued together from disparate bits. This saves weight and increases structural integrity by allowing Santa Cruz to wrap carbon continuously through and around key junctures. This method reinforces the frame with less material while eliminating the artificial stress points that result from bonded construction methods. Finally, the carbon is also compacted from the inside and the outside for a more even finish that avoids any structural defects, excess material build-up, and resin pooling for — you guessed it — even more weight savings.
All that carbon goodness meets at a VPP suspension platform, which returns for the new model year with the same improved mid-stroke support and small bump compliance that maintains snappy pedaling to take advantage of the stiff, lightweight chassis and efficient, 17.5in chainstays whether slaloming through berms or cleaning steep grades. The system's two counter-rotating links yield a vertical wheel path in initial travel to maintain a firm pedaling feel over small bumps and climbs. As the bike compresses deeper into the suspension, the axle moves rearward to accommodate bigger hits for a more forgiving margin for error when you’re measuring the ragged edge of control with the Tallboy's four-inches of travel.
Like its predecessor, the Tallboy's latest X01 build features a one-by drivetrain with Race Face's Turbine crank and SRAM's X01 right shifter. Unlike the 2015 model, the 2016 Tallboy upgrades the former's X1 rear derailleur to an X01 Carbon unit. The rims have also been updated to Easton's ARC 24s, but we're pleased to note that the DT Swiss 350 hubs return for another year. The suspension is also the same, with FOX Racing Shox's 32 Float fork and Float Factory shock providing the cushion for the VPP suspension, and an updated model of Shimano's beloved, proven, and infinitely capable XT brakes and Ice-Tech rotors finish the build kit in reliable style.
