Whereas the original Tallboy was a cross-country rocket that moonlighted as a competent trail rig, the newest version sports a lower, longer, and slackened geometry with a bit more travel for added confidence across rough trails and high-speed descents. Considering these modern design tweaks, the Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon CC 29 X01 Eagle ENVE Complete Mountain Bike is more trail-oriented than ever, yet it never strays far from its cross-country roots with 29-inch wheels carrying momentum with ease.
Taking inspiration from Santa Cruz's burlier siblings of enduro and all-mountain lineage, the updated Tallboy slackens its head tube angle to a trail-worthy 68 degrees. This inspires confidence on rowdy sections of trail where purebred cross-country machines would normally feel twitchy and unnerving. The bottom bracket height is dropped to 13 inches for low-slung handling that keeps you glued to the trail. Another design overhaul is the lengthened reach, which creates a more comfortable cockpit, especially for riders with longer arms. Since the bike's front end is longer than before, the chainstays are reduced to 17 inches to retain the snappy cornering you've grown to love from the original Tallboy.
Another unique feature with the newest Tallboy is the flip chip technology. This ingenious bit of engineering allows you to swap out the provided 29-inch wheels for the supple feel and greater traction of 27.5+ wheels. This is a great feature for the dedicated cross-country racer seeking a bit more versatility for enjoying their local trail network. 27.5+ wheels allow you to drop tire pressure significantly for plushness and grip across chunky rocks and loose dirt. If you choose to run the Tallboy in a 27.5+ configuration, we recommend sticking with 2.8-inch rubber, as certain manufacturer's 3-inch tires may present clearance issues.
Seeing that geometry is only half of the story, you'll be pleased to know that the updated Tallboy employs the latest VPP suspension, known by Santa Cruz as VPP3. This updated suspension platform retains the firm pedaling characteristics you've come to love from VPP, but it's slightly revised for greater mid-stroke support and increased traction at the top of its travel. The lower link is neatly tucked above the bottom bracket, protecting it from harsh rock strikes and flying debris on the trail. Also revised, the upper link is now attached to the top tube for increased standover height and greater rear end stiffness.
This particular build enjoys Santa Cruz's CC-level carbon for generous weight savings of 230 grams (just a tick over 8 ounces) over its C-level counterpart—all without sacrificing structural stiffness or strength. This crème de la crème frame is complemented by the carbon construction of an ENVE M60 Forty Wheelset. ENVE's M60 Forty wheels offer a near-perfect balance of stiffness, strength, and weight savings for discerning trail enthusiasts and podium-sweeping racers alike. And because 2x drivetrains are becoming a relic of the past, the Eagle XO1 drivetrain ditches the pesky front derailleur while retaining plentiful low-end for unrelenting climbs with its massive 10-50 tooth cassette.
