Seek out Fun

The Santa Cruz Tallboy Carbon 27.5+ S complete mountain bike adds a significant degree of surefootedness to one of the world's most beloved trail bikes. Whether you're new to the sport and looking for a confidence boost or an experienced rider who appreciates the benefits of Plus rubber, this notoriously fun trail bike will gladly take you on big rides in control and comfort. The build kit is built to complement the Tallboy's ride qualities, pairing FOX and RockShox at the suspension and seatpost with a full SRAM drivetrain.

Many of you will remember the commotion that the original Tallboy caused when its lively handling immediately dispelled a mountain of preconceived notions about how 29-inch wheels were supposed to handle. The latest iteration of the Tallboy retains its praiseworthy handling with an added dash of versatility, a pinch of aggressive intent, and 27.5+ compatibility that takes the Tallboy into uncharted territory.

Part of the Tallboy’s success stems from its ability to blur the lines between cross country rocket and surefooted trail bike. To that end, the Tallboy was built to accommodate 27.5+ wheels, as it's built here, as well as 29-inch wheels. This split personality is enabled by the reversible “flip chip” at the upper link. Setting the flip chip to the “low” mode relaxes the head angle by roughly half a degree and lowers the bottom bracket, which makes for an ideal setup when paired with the slightly larger diameter of 29-inch wheels. The slightly smaller 27.5+ wheels pair with the “high” setting, allowing for similar clearance between the bottom bracket and the ground. The upshot is headache-free swaps between wheel sizes, which gives you more options than ever when you hit the trail.

Regardless of wheel size, the Tallboy generates 4.3 inches of travel through the latest version of Santa Cruz’s VPP technology. As with all VPP bikes, the Tallboy’s counter-rotating links are carefully arranged to resist activation by pedaling forces, all but eliminating unwanted bobbing under power. This being the latest iteration of VPP, it’s tuned to provide more midstroke support than previous generations of the VPP platform, giving the rider a better feel for the terrain, and a livelier ride feel.

While the excellent suspension plays a large role, a key part of the Tallboy’s secret sauce is its carefully tuned geometry. At 68 degrees, the head angle is sufficiently nimble for whipping through tight chicanes, while remaining relaxed enough to stay composed at high speed. The 17-inch chainstays enhance the ability to change directions quickly, while retaining enough length to provide ample traction when the trail points skyward. The moderately roomy cockpit positions the rider between the wheels for reflexive handling with a minimum of effort.

The frame is Santa Cruz's Carbon C construction. Although slightly less svelte than the premium Carbon CC construction (by roughly 240g), Carbon C lays claim to an equivalent degree of strength and stiffness. Using this Carbon C construction results in a more modest asking price, at the expense of a weight penalty that is noticeable on a correctly calibrated scale, but will almost certainly go unnoticed on the trail.

  • A cross country 29er with a wild side built for trail riding
  • 5in of highly efficient VPP travel
  • Flip-chip enables compatibility with 29in and 27.5+ wheels
  • 74-degree seat tube angle optimizes pedaling efficiency
  • Longer reach shifts weight forward for better traction
  • Carbon C frame is durable and lightweight
  • Plus tires for maximum traction on loose or lumpy trails
  • One-by drivetrain provides simple reliability

Type I Fun

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Very versatile bike that rides smooth over obstacles, and feels like a long travel bike. It is pretty playful for the size while maintaining an extremely stable feel. For reference, while biking back to the car from the trail, it was an effortless no hands cruise down hill, where as the hightower felt wobbly in the handle bars.

In my opinion, it corners well, can climb tech terrain great, and can roll over pretty big/steep obstacles without a problem. Its a great all around buy for anyone concerned about climbing efficiency on the more rugged trails and still looking to do it all.

I even took it to a pump track and hit some springy table tops. It preformed great and loading the suspension sprung me into a proper flow with out much need for a lot of speed or pedeling.

If you're looking to pedal uphill, and get on the more untamed trail, this is probably a great bike for you. I wouldn't really recommend this for shuttling DH.

Feel free to hit me up if you have questions or are wondering if this is the right bike for you.

super happy with this purchase

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

The tallboy was my sons first REAL bike, I decided to really put some money into his growing interest in mountain biking. Sadly at 15 yrs old he’s as tall as I am, fortunately, at 15 years old we ride the same bike so in a way I bought a bike I can ride as well. The C level carbon looses nothing in ride quality, it just picks up a little weight. The handling charistics of the tallboy have always been at the top of the class and the 3rd generation keeps pushing the ceiling. For a do it all cross country bike you can’t beat it, the tallboy flies on the climbs and go’s back down equally at ease. It’s at home on a race course, set up the suspension right and you will roll over anything out there. The tallboy is versatile and fun, the only sad part is my son is outgrowing his bike and will need a new one next year and it will be a little big for his old man. Feel free to contact me directly with any questions on the tallboy.
