Why We Like the Fenix SLiC Disc Road Frameset

As Ridley's quintessential all-round road bike, the Fenix SLC Disc Road Frameset is suited for any terrain along your route. It receives a few significant upgrades to add cleaner lines, more aerodynamics, and a more responsive ride. With an endurance-type geometry, the Fenix SLC is designed to comfort on extended base-miles training while maintaining an affinity for aggressive, challenging terrain. Considering the rolling terrain of Ridley's home territory of Flanders, Belgium, it's no surprise that Ridley continues to push the limits of the Fenix SLC. It floats across cols and steep bergs that speckle the countryside as well as maintains a stable ride-quality across rough terrain and cobbles.

Ridley utilizes a blended layup for the Fenix SLC with a precision mix of 30T and 24T high-modulus carbon that maintains stiffness needed for race-pace accelerations and precision steering on technical descents. Yet the Fenix SLC manages enough compliance to extend comfort for the to be a daily driver. Out front, the Fenix SLC receives a fresh carbon fork. The fork uses a similar blended carbon design as found in the frame, and is straightened to provide improved frontend stiffness and more responsive steering. Ridley claims this upgrade moves the Fenix SLC towards the riding qualities demanded by modern all-round cyclists who explore deeper and further into lesser maintained terrain.

The Fenix SLC also supports a fully integrated cockpit should you decide to make use of the full aerodynamic potential of the new design. A Forza N1 integrated handler bar and stem neatly conceal the shifting and brake housing. This integration tidies up the frontend and sets a distinct tone to showcase Ridley's intent to elevate the Fenix SLC's aerodynamics towards the front of the peloton.

A 27.2mm standard seatpost is used on the Fenix SLC. However, to further improve aerodynamics, the seat collar is covered and hidden beneath an aero-shaped cap that gracefully flows from the top-tube to the seatpost.

I purchased this frame and built it up with Campagnolo Chorus 12 speed mechanical group set with hydraulic disc brakes. I have been riding it for about two months and know I made the right decision. There is one thing you won’t find on the frame description here or on the Ridley website. This frame does not have a cable stop for the front derailleur. Your front derailleur has to either be electronic or have a built in cable stop such as on the Shimano Ultegra. That is what I eventually had to do and it works with no issues with the Campagnolo shifters. In regard to the frame itself, I absolutely love it! It really does deliver what Ridley designed it for and that is to be a great all around frame that smooths out the road imperfections, yet is very responsive to rider input. It is not twitchy like an all out aggressive racing frame, but goes where you point it with confidence when cornering. I have a few routes with steep curving downhills where I reach speeds of over 40 mph and do it with complete confidence and no speed shimmy. The clean internal cable routing must reduce some drag because I am coating past others on more expensive bikes on these descents. I routinely ride in fast group rides averaging around 20 mph over 50 miles and this frame accelerates like a cheetah and climbs like a Billy goat. My last bike was an old chromoly frameset with Campy 8 speed and I struggled to keep up. Now I am doing my share of the pulling and doing it with less effort all while feeling less rider fatigue. I wanted a frame that was unique from my friends who all seem to be on one of the big four or a Cervelo. I also didn’t want a frame with an outrageous price tag. Ridley and Competitive Cyclist delivered. The candy red is gorgeous in the sun and I have received many compliments on its look. If the Lotto Soudal mens’ and womens’ pro teams trust Ridley to ride cobbles, climb mountains and sprint to wins, I figured it was good enough for me and I do not regret my choice.

So I'm closer to 6ft. 5'11 and change. Most bikes I purchased is a large. Never had a Ridley. Medium or large frame?
