Back in the '90s, Profile Design was primarily involved in creating aero bars and wind-cutting accessories for triathlon bikes. Since then, they've been busy in developing cutting-edge wheels for road cycling and racing applications. Case in point, the 38/TwentyFour Carbon Clincher Disc Wheel by Profile Design is a speedy workhorse that sets PRs on your favorite segments with its impressive balance of streamlined aerodynamics, unbelievable power transfer, and relatively lightweight construction. 6-bolt disc hubs deliver reliable stopping power during sustained descents and soaking-wet conditions, which is something that traditional carbon wheels have struggled with in the past.
Profile's engineers settled upon the 38/TwentyFour's rim depth and width profile from extensive wind tunnel testing in conjunction with Computational Fluid Dynamics. Because wind tunnel testing alone isn't necessarily transferable to real-world situations where wind speed and direction are constantly in flux, Profile Design worked with Speed Theory to simulate the historical wind patterns and angles of popular race courses while riding the 38/TwentyFour.
After simulating the predominant wind speeds and patterns of popular race venues, Profile then tried out different width and depth profiles with Computational Fluid Dynamics to achieve an optimal balance between slippery aerodynamics and stable handling in tricky crosswinds. The result is a wheel that's 38-millimeters deep and 24-millimeters wide externally, giving you just enough aerodynamics to shave precious seconds on the flats while maintaining a relatively low weight on the climbs and handling crosswinds without the dreaded "sail effect."
Looking to the hubs, you'll find the use forged and machined 6061-T6 aluminum with a shot peened anodized finish that's 18 percent stronger than standard aluminum freehubs. The shot peened anodized finish prevents cassette damage from digging into the hub body or moving unnecessarily, which translates to crisper shifts and more efficient power delivery.
