Smash rocks on the new mach.
Trails and riding styles continue to evolve, and with that, geometries continue to progress. Mountain bikers are a fickle bunch, we want bikes that descend like mini DH sleds and climb like XC machines. Pivot updated the Mach 6 Carbon Pro XT 1x Complete Mountain Bike with tweaks to its geometry, making it more capable downhill, yet the DW-Link suspension works so efficiently, it still pedals very well.
Pivot received feedback from its enduro racers and owners. After extensive testing, it created the perfect combination of progressive geometry for high-speed chunder with enough agility so you don't feel like you're parallel parking a limo on tight trails. We're used to seeing bikes excel at the bookends, but it's rare to find one that does both so well. The Mach 6 is ready to crush your next enduro, help you progress in the park, or knock out that big weekend epic with the crew. If you are between the Mach 5.5 and 6 and are trying to figure out which way to go, both bikes are similar on paper in terms of travel but the Mach 6's geometry and build situate it as more of an all-mountain and enduro bike and the Mach 5.5 is a pedal-all-day, aggressive trail bike.
The Mach 6 Carbon kicks the head tube back to a more stable 65.75 degrees, and the bike's reach and wheelbase get stretched out a bit, too. Descending, you'll notice that you feel more "in" rather than "on" the bike. The longer and slacker treatment makes the bike rally down high-speed sections and technical terrain with the confidence usually reserved for DH bikes and dual-crown forks. What's amazing is that this imperturbable nature on the downhill doesn't take away from the flickability and pedaling often lost on longer-travel bikes. Climbing up long fireroads and steep, punchy singletrack is aided by the steeper 74-degree seattube angle and longer cockpit as it keeps the front wheel on the ground and you in a more powerful pedaling position.
Pivot hails from Tempe, AZ, and they build bikes that are just as adept in technical climbing as they are going downhill quickly. The bike's geometry and suspension design aids in stair step, loose, and steep climbing by adding traction and preventing loss of momentum. Smaller riders will benefit from geometry optimized in every frame size. Sizes medium, large, and x-large see significant increases in reach measurements while sizes small and x-small are compact, keeping with Pivot's rider-size-specific design philosophy and offering the climbing advantages of the steeper seat angle without being too stretched out so you'll still have nimble, capable handling on descents.
The Mach 6 Carbon continues with the excellent dw-link suspension platform and on the Mach 6, it's optimized for a longer travel application. The dw-link’s anti-squat delivers excellent traction without losing pedaling efficiency. When a bike accelerates, its mass is transferred rearward. Dw-link’s patented position-sensitive anti-squat perfectly balances this rearward mass transfer, increasing efficiency, traction, bump sensitivity, and eliminating pedal feedback. The bike is also unmatched by other suspensions under heavy braking since the design projects an instant center to an ideal location, achieving a balance of traction and stability when you grab a handful of the Shimano XT brakes. For further evidence of the new Mach 6's big hit intentions, look no further than the linkage. It shares the same ultra-stiff clevis and linkage design with its bigger travel brother, the Firebird.
The responsiveness and bottomless feel of the Mach 6 is matched only by the exceptionally efficient climbing capability. That makes for quicker, more enjoyable transfers, getting you to the top before anyone else. The 6in of rear travel are controlled by a custom tuned FOX Factory Kashima Float DPX2 shock with EVOL air sleeve. The new Float DPX2 features increased oil flow, preventing fading and overheating on long, rough descents. The EVOL air sleeve on the Mach 6’s DPX2 increases sensitivity and has a very linear, bottomless feel that works well with dw-link's kinematics. The requisite Kashima coating on the Factory offerings have an incredibly plush feel and the Open, Medium, and Firm options are available on-the-fly with additional adjustment for low speed compression tuning in the open setting. Matching the Mach 6 Carbon’s rear suspension is the 160mm FOX Factory 36 fork, also with an EVOL air spring, for unparalleled small bump sensitivity. The fork's stout chassis sits stiff to carve through high speed berms and provide exceptional tracking through the roughest rock gardens and ledges at speed.
Pivot's hollow core internal molding construction and the use of premium materials create a supremely durable and exceptionally light frame. The Mach 6 has stiffness numbers and strength comparable to Pivot's DH bike, the Phoenix. Large tube cross sections and suspension-specific EnduroMax bearings contribute to the unrivaled frame stiffness and precise handling needed in a race bike. The frame utilizes short, stiff links, aligned in the direction of incoming forces, and a triangulated rear swingarm to send suspension forces in the most efficient layout possible. This structural advantage lets you put more power down and keeps the bike tracking straight in the braking bumps, setting you up perfectly for the switchback where others veer off course.
We should also note that the bike looks as pretty as it rides, and internal routing—including Di2 ports and battery compartment—keep the lines clean, the housing out of harm's way, and future-proofs the frame. Clearance for tires up to 2.6-inches let you install the latest enduro rubber for maximum grip and comfort without scuffing the paint.
The Shimano XT build on this Mach 6 Carbon, has the ever popular Shimano one-by setup with an XTR rear derailleur moving the chain across an 11-46t XT cassette. Paired with the 30t Race Face Aeffect crank, the setup simply works very well in a variety of conditions and terrain. The wheels are DT Swiss M 1700 Spline wheels and the hoops have a 30mm internal width. This plumps up the 2.3in wide Maxxis Highroller II tires and are perfect for any width up to the frame's max tire rating of 2.6-inches. The rims are laced to the hubs containing the quick engaging 36t star Ratchet System with straight-pull butted spokes and aluminum Pro Lock nipples. The custom designed 35mm Pivot handlebar and stem work as a system to provide stiffness and compliance where you need it.
