29-inch wheels are the typical choice for cross country racing. However, the mid-sized wheels have proven their mettle at the highest levels of competition, and are a great choice for smaller riders, or those who simply want their bike to be as light and nimble as possible. So, if you're considering smaller wheels for their reduced weight and improved handling, the Pivot LES 27.5 should be enough to sway your decision. Using the accumulated knowledge from Pivot's extensive composites program, the LES boasts a smooth ride and responsive handling that'll put smiles on the faces of pro racers and enthusiasts alike.
And while Pivot may be best known for its full-suspension bikes, don't think for a second that the knowhow from its extensive suspension lineup doesn't translate into top tier hardtail frames as well. Stiffness in the right places is key, as seen in the 12x148mm thru-axle and massive tapered head tube. The BB92 bottom bracket shell allows for the widest possible shell, both saving weight and improving stiffness over a standard 73mm threaded shell. Details like custom-molded stay guards and an impact-resistant down tube guard clearly illustrate that Pivot wasn't willing to cut corners on the way to a pro-level race bike.
Pivot's extensive experience working in carbon fiber is on full display with the LES. The most significant example of this is the hardest to see, namely the fully compacted carbon fiber that's used in the frame. By optimizing the compaction via their proprietary hollow-core molding process, Pivot removes any unnecessary epoxy, which minimizes weight and optimizes strength. The tube forming is of particular importance because it dictates the ride quality of the frame. Accordingly, areas like the chainstays and down tube, where stiffness is paramount, have been built as large as possible in order to fight deflection. However, the seatstays have been flattened and feature a slight bow, which allows them to bend under load, smoothing out the ride. Basically, Pivot made sure to sweat the small stuff so that your bike rides beautifully over rough terrain while remaining stiff when you get on the pedals.
