Some riders have a soft spot for the air-sprung squish of standard forks, but you find yourself to be more of a connoisseur of the coil, and we don't blame you. The supple and supportive feel of coil takes the rough sting out of rugged and rocky trails with ease, soaking up brake bumps and providing total linear suspension rates that you can count on through every chunky drop and root-latticed section of woods. The downside in the past was the lack of adjustability, but with the new MRP Ribbon Coil 160mm Boost Fork for 29ers and 27.5+ we're finding we can have our cake and eat it too. The Ribbon offers you lofty, adjustable squish, three different coils for finding your preferred suspension rate, and dials for getting everything tuned just right before your ride.
Seeing that MRP's local trails in Grand Junction, Colorado are some of the most challenging and diverse in the country, it makes perfect sense that they'd create the Ribbon Coil with 35-millimeter stanchions for reduced torsional flex when you're rallying it over chunky rocks, steep descents, and harsh drops. In fact, the Ribbon is named after an infamous trail in the Grand Junction area, touted as one of the most "unique slab rock trails that's as fast as your bike will permit." This brutal testing ground sets the bar high for the Ribbon's performance, meaning it had to excel on the steepest descents at high speeds, but also pick lines across technical sections with methodical precision.
The Ribbon Coil comes ready to run with the standard medium shock installed, but come along with light and firm springs as well, letting you pick what feels best for you based on riding preferences and weight. You'll find all of the benefits you'd expect from a coil suspension, like linear spring rate, fewer seals for reduced friction, and consistency through all kinds of terrain. Unlike coil forks of the past, though, the Ribbon can be adjusted on the fly, and weighs in at just 4.65lb, beating many air sprung forks on the market. To fine tune the fork, an external preload adjustment on the top of the left leg can be tweaked as necessary, while the right leg hosts compression adjustment for climbing and descending. MRP's Ramp Control System is employed at the bottom of the stanchions, allowing you to perfect the ideal amount of bottom out support you crave with quick adjustments.
