When Mavic finally dropped the Ksyrium Pro Disc Clincher Wheel, we greeted it like an old friend. After all, it's essentially the model that we learned how to ride, train, race, and suffer on, just with an update to disc compatibility — basically, it feels like our cycling past coming into full contact with the industry's future. The latest generation returns virtually unchanged, leaving our beloved, do-it-all platform unsullied by any "innovations" besides the updated braking system.
The new Ksyrium Pro Disc's rims still benefit from the same ISM 4D rim as their predecessors, the most advanced alloy rim Mavic has ever produced. A new extrusion and new milling pattern has shaved weight. The big difference for the Pro Disc set, of course, is that the rim's sidewalls are neither machined for braking, nor do they get Mavic's proprietary Exalith 2 brake track; however, the improved modulation and virtually immediate response of disc braking more than compensates for those omissions.
Mavic also still opts for familiar hubs equipped with QRM+ bearings. They're double-sealed for longevity, and each hub allows for micro-fine, preload adjustments without requiring you to remove your wheel from the bike. Keeping with the lightweight design, a Force Transfer System Light (or FTS-L) is used in the freehub body. This reinforces the contact area between the aluminum hub body and the pawls with two stainless steel inserts for a better engagement. Both the Shimano CenterLock and standard six-bolt rotor mount platforms are super strong without tacking on large amounts of weight to the wheels, and the front hub has been configured to accept either a quick-release or 15mm axle with the included interchangeable end caps.
The full complement of Zicral spokes represents another returning feature. An extremely durable, proprietary alloy, Zicral spokes are wonderful bits of engineering. The front wheel uses 20 spokes in a radial lacing pattern, and the rear has 20 spokes with a two-cross drive side and radial non-drive side lacing pattern — Mavic fetishists will recognize this as the French brand's Isopulse lacing pattern. The Pro Disc wheels include Mavic's own tires, too, which are the result of a collaboration with Hutchinson. The GripLink front tire and PowerLink rear tire feature new casings and new compounds, making for increased traction and puncture resistance up front and lower rolling resistance out back.
