Why We Like The Z1 MIPS Helmet

One of our favorite lids we carry is the Z1 MIPS Helmet from Belgian based brand Lazer. It might not be the lightest or the most aero, however, its classic looks, MIPS protection, large and numerous vents, and at 190 grams, still plenty light weight, creates a combination of features that take it straight to the top. There's no shortage of fine helmets in the premium category range and a bevy of Lazer specific details means this helmet holds its own as a top-end racing and training helmet with safety and styling to match.

As many of its counterparts do, the Z1 relies on a four-piece In-Mold polycarbonate outer shell and EPS foam lining to protect against initial impacts. Lazer extends the helmet's shell to enhance protection at the temples, a sensitive area that's especially vulnerable in crashes, and then adds a final inner layer of protection with MIPS technology. MIPS, or Multi-Directional Impact Protection System, refers to the Swedish technology added to the helmet in the form of an inner basket that rotates slightly upon impact to absorb the brain-damaging rotational energy created in certain crashes.

Great Fit with Sunglass Room to Spare

The retention mechanism is ingenious and really helps this helmet fit like it's custom built. I really like the extra room in front which helps fit medium to large sunglasses without any interference with the helmet. Ventilation is very good as well. Very good helmet imo

Sizing is wonky

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Already have this helmet in a large, my usual size. But it’s just a little too big where I have to wear a hat or beanie under it to get the fit properly snug. Ok for hot days, or cold days. Ordered a medium to wear when I don’t want to wear anything under it. Too small, even at full out adjustment does not fit comfortably. So I’m too big for a medium and too small for the large without “shimming” my head. Luckily the medium fit my big hair wife so she’s got a new Lazer. The helmet itself is fantastic, lots of vents, well made, comes with a nice bag and an extra sweat band. Recommend if it fits you.

Oval Melon? This is your helmet.

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have a large oval head. Not many brands make helmets specifically for true oval heads ... Enter Lazer. Wasn't familiar with them before I started looking for a new brain bucket. They even have a PDF chart on their website detailing which helmets are built for oval heads and which fit round heads. The Z1 is light, fit is excellent, and it's well ventilated. Their superb retention system also makes it possible to adjust the depth, which is awesome because a MIPs layer tends to take away just enough depth to keep helmets riding high. There's even space for an optional accessory LED to be mounted in the back for added visibility at night. Superb helmet ... You just forget it's on your head. As for sizing, just measure your head and follow the chart for sizing recommendations.

very nice helmet

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Bought this to replace an ?expired? helmet. had never owned a lazer. The fit is pleasantly roomy. I was always a large, and in the large size the lazer fits perfectly on my bare bald head with the tightening system all the way down. My old helmet was tight even when loosened all the way. The lazer just feels good and secure. For those with bigger hair and if I wanted to wear anything under it, the fit allows me to just dial it out, put on a cycling cap or beanie, and it still fits perfectly. The helmet bag is a nice touch, too. As it?s the extra set of sweat pads. I ordered the aero shell too, couldn?t resist and although I don?t race, it should come in handy in the cold wet of the Pacific Northwest. I would order the optional tail light if I could find one. Get yourself a premium helmet like a Lazer.

Bought this helmet as a safety upgrade for training rides as my teams race helmet has no MIPS feature. First use took me about 20 minutes to get used to not having the boa dial at the back of the head but it is a great feeling to not have that pressure point in the helmet. This helmet rates really high on a popular helmet safety ratings study (not sure if i can mention it by name in this review) and is a big reason for me choosing this helmet. I also purchased the LED light that goes into the back panel of the helmet as an added safety feature. Overall this helmet feels great and has loads of adjustable fit features. I will say the helmet seems to fit a little large compared to other brands. I have been a medium in all other helmets but feel i possibly could have fit a small in this particular model, my review is "true to size" but you may want to try on in store prior to online purchase.

It survived 5 intense years of mountain biking & cyclocross racing. I loved the weight and feel on my head. I loved the aero shell that goes with it! The Z1 is something easy and light for everyday useage. Plus, Tommeke wore it!

Sleek, nice fit, low profile

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Size Bought:
Medium

Bought the Z1 to replace my Prevail 1 from 2013, which is long past its lifespan of 3-5 years. Product description claims the Z1 weighs 190 grams. The medium I purchased is nearly 100 grams heavier than stated, coming in at nearly 290 grams - might be a typo in the description. Let's fix that Competitive Cyclist! Realistically though, the 100 grams is about the weight of a C-battery, and I've had headaches that apply more pressure than that. I do like the all-around snug fit. It's a keeper.

This is my second Lazer helmet. I went with a MIPs addition this time. Fit is perfect due to Lazer's very good sizing, retention and adjustment system. I like the improved buckle and strap. Venting is very good but I am considering getting the aero cap for chiller day's as we slide into autumn. Looking forward to many more rides with this lid.
