The pioneers of aero are back with its deepest section rim under the Vanquish banner, the Vanquish 8 Disc Wheelset. It's designed for outright speed on flatter road courses, TT's, and tri's, and thanks to its refined rim profile, it prevents you from getting blown around in blustery conditions which often kill aerodynamics and confidence. HED's used carbon in its rim construction for quite a while as a way to boost stiffness and drop grams both as fairings on its aluminum capped clinchers and full carbon on the tubular.
Due to the excessive heat build buildup at a carbon braking surface during prolonged braking and 80-120 psi of air pressure pushing outward on a potentially softened surface, HED was rightfully cautious an opted not to release a full carbon rim clincher. However, with disc brake setups gaining (and slowing) momentum and moving stopping duties over to a dedicated rotor, HED decided the time was right for a full-carbon tubeless clincher wheelset. So, the Vanquish 8 joins the V4 and V6 wheels in the lineup as its deepest profile option, ideal for solo efforts and stopping the clock a little quicker.
HED's Vanquish rims are constructed with a meticulous level of quality in its Minnesota factory, where the carbon layups take on surgical precision. It features an optimized shape with internal and external widths that provide exceptional aerodynamic performance when paired with the popular 23 to 28-millimeter wide and wider tires, so if you seek high-volume on your drop bar bike and are spoiled with the comfort and traction that comes with it, you'll be covered. Furthermore, its tubeless-ready technology that reduces rolling resistance for more speed over chip-seal and smooths rural roads to ward off undue fatigue.
The tubeless-friendly setup grabs our attention for sure, but the real highlight of these wheels is its refined profile that adds an injection of speed on every ride. Its 80mm deep profile is fast over a wide swath of the yaw angles. HED understands that high speed requires confidence and increased control that's often lost on deep, lightweight wheels. This means the Vanquish's 80mm depth is less susceptible to crosswinds and handles much more akin to a lower profile rim.
Since HED's engineers didn't have to tune the all-carbon rim to handle braking duties, the Vanquish rim forgoes high temp resins that can affect ride quality and durability and the shape can also be better tuned for aerodynamics while dropping weight. We're simply sold on disc brakes and we get why racers and the industry, HED included, are firmly on board. Discs completely do away with one of our greatest criticisms of carbon rims, inconsistent braking, so you get tons of stopping power with better modulation in all conditions, while virtually eliminating the chance that the Vanquish wheels will violently deform because they hit the glass transition temperature as a result of a long, hot descent.
The rims are laced up with 24 bladed spokes front and rear to a set of 545 disc brake hubs. The hubs use a 5-pawl system with 45-tooth engagement, and large 6902 bearings on oversized axles with wide flanges for a stiff, lateral bracing angle that lends itself to more efficient power transfer and better handling. Both front and rear wheels are ready to roll with centerlock rotors and can be adapted to 6-bolt with the addition of an adapter sold separately.
