Claiming to reign supreme over the competition, the HED Vanquish 6 Disc Wheelset rolls into the future with a pristine carbon layup and sleek aerodynamic profile that cuts through the wind like a hot knife through butter. Admittedly, some of us have been sitting back pondering if HED would ever jump into the full carbon game, having always opted for aluminum rim bead, hook, and beds in the past, claiming they simply weren't convinced that carbon was the right application for a braking surface, but with the bloom of tubeless and disc setups taking over the road market, the end of their mixed-media hoops was nigh. And with that, HED's engineers crafted these deep carbon wheels that reign supreme in aerodynamics, without compromising on braking and weight.
HED's Vanquish rims are constructed with a mind blowing level of quality control in their Minnesota factory, where carbon layups are taken nothing short of seriously. They feature an all-new shape with lofty widths that allow top-tier aerodynamic performance when paired with 23-to-28-millimeter tires, though if your ride pulls double-duty and embarks on off-road endeavors from time to time, you'll be pleased to find that the rims can take up to a 42mm tire for optimal float and pneumatic suspension when conditions vary. This pairs up with the tubeless-ready technology for reduced rolling resistance that soars over chattery roads, and smooths out cobbles for a little more comfort on the ride.
The tubeless-friendly setup may reduce rolling resistance, but the hilight of these wheels is their well crafted profile that gives you a hit of free-speed on your ride. Their 60mm profile is an aerodynamic truism, but HED also knows that faster speeds require a heightened sense of control that's often at odds with wheels of this depth. HED's Stability Control Technology (SCT), which reduces lateral forces at 0-15 degree yaw angles. This makes the Vanquish's 60mm depth handle unruly wind with the intuitive predictability of a 30 or 40mm deep wheel that has a traditional NACA airfoil cross section.
Because HED's engineers don't feel that an all-carbon rim ticks the box for braking, the Vanquish is only available in a disc setup. We've had the opportunity to ride several models of road disc brakes, and we can understand why HED is keen to make this transition. Discs do away with one of our greatest critiques of carbon rims — the questionable braking — for stopping power that modulates better, grabs with more consistency, and virtually ensures that the Vanquish wheels will never violently deform because they hit the glass transition temperature as a result of a long, hot descent.
The rims are laced up neatly to a set of 545 disc brake hubs using twenty-four bladed steel spokes (front and rear) to continue with aerodynamics. The hubs themselves use a 5-pawl system with 45-tooth engagement, and large 6902 bearings on oversized axles with wide flanges for a stiff, lateral bracing angle that lends itself to more efficient power transfer. Both front and rear are ready to roll with centerlock rotors, but can be adapted to 6-bolt with the addition of an adapter (not included).
