The black bird.

When you and your go-anywhere trail bike head out for a day of quality one-on-one time, you don't place any limits on where the day might take you. Enter Five Ten's versatile Maltese Falcon Shoe. If you and your machine happen to discover miles of tacky singletrack begging to be torn up, you'll want a shoe you can slam into the pedals and not think about again as you sweep through corners and rally over rollers. Then again, if the day's adventures find you pedaling over rocky cruxes then hopping off your bike to escort it along the side of a serious cliff, the lightest, most speed-focused shoe on the market won't help you much. Five Ten strikes an admirable balance with the Maltese, whose name suggests that—like the plot of a certain classic novel—there's more going on than meets the eye.

Regardless, the shoe's sleek leather uppers and simple, effective design make it a trustworthy companion on fast rides and technical days alike. Five Ten designed the lug pattern on the rubber sole to make clipping in and out quick and easy and give you grip on treacherous sections of trail. It's got a soft EVA midsole for cushioning as well as a combination lace-up and hook-and-loop closure to allow you to customize the fit of the shoe, ensuring security without undue restriction. We can't promise the Maltese Falcon will give you the moody confidence of a 1930's detective, but it might come close.

Runs small, lots of pinching.

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it

Toe box is very narrow, synthetic upper pinches your foot when you walk.

This shoe runs smaller than other f tens

  • Fit: Runs small

I don't like the consistency of sizing from five tens and it will discourage me from buying them online in the future.

Didnt even last 5 months

The bottom of these shoes tore up like crazy around the clipless insert. They are so torn up now I dont dare ride with them. Moving on from FiveTen to Giro for my next shoe.

Extra sticky. In the best way.

I ended Up buying these for my daughter because the women’s version were too narrow and she absolutely loves them. She loves the ability to ride both flats and clip-less without switching shoes or pedals.

      Great shoes

I mainly use these shoes here and there on the weekends for all mountain and enduros. I run clipless with HT T1’s and they seem to work well for me. The treads are nice and soft, easy to walk in, not heavy, and fairly stiff. I have tried on the Kestrel’s which seemed narrow and weighed twice as much. There is an odd feeling (maybe in the padding on the inside of the sole or maybe it’s just me?) after a long down hill when my feet are fatigued, it does not bother me or hurt just a noticeable feeling. I got size 10.5/44 which fits well, I also wear 10.5 in Nike, puma and all my other shoes. Was exactly what I was looking for and in the price range also.

        Great shoes

        Maltese Falcon MB shoe

This 5/10 Maltese shoe is an awesome shoe not only for the compliments it brings , but for the performance I get from them . It has the perfect stiffness but you do not lose the comfort. This shoe works well clipless or non clipless. Have not tried the clips on because it works so well on flats . This is a 10 for me because it is comfortable well made and is universal .
Thanks Back Country for all the great products.

          Good, Comfortable Riding Shoe

          • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
          • Fit: True to size

This was a huge upgrade from a pair of old crusty hand-me-down cleats. But with that being said I love these. I currently have them set up to ride clip less on some crank bro trail pedals. Inset cleat attachment point is highly adjustable and can be adjusted forward or back depending on riding preferences.
The shoes are stiff and well reinforced in the toe box area which has saved me from some bloody toes on a few downhill rock strikes. I would agree with other reviewers here though that they are not so stiff that they are uncomfortable should you need to hop off and hike your bike for a hot sec. Overall super happy with these shoes.
When setting them up clip less you do need to use a box cutter or xacto knife to cut around the rubber bit that covers up the cleat mounts as they can also be ridden as flats before this rubber section is removed.
I would say the shoe runs true to size but is slightly narrower in the toe box area. This works well for my narrower foot but is good to keep in mind when considering sizing

          Comfortable shoe

          • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
          • Fit: True to size

This is shoe is a great all purpose shoe. I've used it at the bike park with flat pedals and on mountain bike rides with clipless pedals. The shoes is stiff but comfortable to walk in.

          Very Comfortable!

          • Familiarity: I've used it several times
          • Fit: True to size

Just picked these up and have done 2 rides on them so this is a pretty early review but I am very happy with them thus far. Given I am coming off some 10 year old Specialized XC shoes so I had the bar set pretty low but so far they great. I like that the cleat is recessed enough to walk around without making a bunch of noise or feeling like I am super wobbly.

They are decently stiff but flexible enough that if you need to get off and hike-a-bike you are good to go.

I will have to come back and update after I have put more miles on them but so far so good!

HIi ¡, i have now an old pair of specialized xc shoe too,,, and id like to get one of this 5.10 maltese,, did u get the same size than u specializaed ? i have doub in the size ,, thank u ¡¡

My go-to for non XC rides

I really like this shoe. The grip is great if you need to get off the bike. Very comfortable. They are pretty lightweight.

Definitely not a race fit as the toe box has quite alot of room for me. I tend to use these for gnarlier rides in the 15 mile and under range, anything longer and I opt for my XC shoes for efficiency. Pedaling is pretty good on these.

im not a big guy so Im not putting a ton of power into the sole so pedaling is just fine.

            I highly recommend,

Great shoes very comfortable and the rubber is super sticky for great traction on the pedals. While the picture makes the Carbon color look grey they are actually more black. Great purchase!

These shoes are very comfy! I haven't spent enough time in them to get a full review going, but so far I love the fit. They are very flexible and nice to walk around in when off the bike. I'd say fit my be slightly narrow and long if anything, but fairly true to size.
