The DT Swiss ER1600 DB Spline Wheel is here to soak up some of the chatter and give you a plush feel while you tackle the roughest of roads ahead. It is eager and ready to dive down dirt roads for weekend bikepacking endeavors, keeping you afloat through the sandy and loose flats, just to turn around and hug mud at your local cyclocross race series the next week. The rim is set up to roll tubeless, allowing you to run lower tire pressures to give yourself a little added pneumatic suspension on the ride, with a boost in grip holding you to the road ahead, and disc brake compatibility brings next-level modulation for steep country roads that have your guts twisting.

The tubeless ready aluminum rims are 23mm deep with widths of 20mm inner and 24mm external. That puts it right about at the perfect width for getting the most out of wider road, 'cross, and gravel tires. The 50 Straightpull hubs are splined for center lock disc use and for Shimano/SRAM 11-speed cassettes with endcaps for 15 x 100mm front, 12 x 142mm rear. They come along with a 6 bolt adapter, if your rotors of choice aren't centerlock compatible, ensuring you can run your wheels just as you like them. Lacing up each hub you'll find 24 DT aero comp spokes, rim providing a lightweight build you'll appreciate on the climbs, an excellent ride that helps smooth out the washboards, plus a touch of aerodynamics that is always a help while motoring in the flats.

The spokes are of the straight pull variety, so there isn't the traditional j-bend at the head. This design allows for superior strength to weight ratio and better spoke alignment with its more direct trajectory. The end result is a stiffer and more responsive wheel for better handling when pushed hard. As a nice final touch, DT Swiss injects a patented liquid into the alloy Squorx nipples that helps prevent the nipples from loosening and thus, lower spoke tension, for an extremely durable build that stays true — and comfortable for many miles.

Fantastic Upgrade

I purchased a Trek Emonda for exercise and weight-loss. I am a former century rider from the early 90’s and thought I would get into riding casually but later found myself drawn back to the riding community cycling more and more. (Not a bad thing, right?) Anyhow, the Bontrager TLR’s served me well. I abused them. Initially I was significantly over the weight limit for those wheels and they held up fairly well. [greater than expected] When it came time to replace these wheels, I wanted DT Swiss because I was familiar with their reputation for building quality wheels. DT Swiss are well known for producing excellent spokes and hubs used by competitor brands. Truthfully, I wanted a set of wheels with 240 hubs but that wheel set was out of my price range and …well, I am still fond of abusing things and not really worrying about breaking anything but I digress. I purchased these wheels a few months ago and have abused the mess out of them. They have served me well. They are a phenomenal wheel for the money. If you are looking for the best value at this price point, you should really consider this wheelset.
