Dainese Trail Skins Air - Ride Review

Been using these all summer since I made a short ride video of the elbow and knee Trail Skin Air pads I purchased from Competetive Cyclist. Dainese isn't kidding about ordering one size down from the size chart. The fit is perfect, pads don't slide down, and the fit and comfort is fantastic. I'm really happy with these pads.

I've been using the knee and elbow pads all summer. Very hot and humid in Southern Michigan this year, and these pads are about as cool ventilating as one can get. When you get moving, you can really feel the air on your knees, which is really great in the heat. This may backfire on me come fall and winter when it gets really cold, as I'll probably wear my non ventilated old Fox Enduro pads to keep the knees warm in the cold season. As for how these pads were for riding? I absolutely forget I have them on once I get going on a ride. I wore them every day for a week long trip to Northern Michigan, to the Marquette trails you may or may not have heard of - really epic trails, rough, rocks, roots, big climbs, fast bumpy descents and everything inbetween. I love these pads for that kind of riding - gave me incredible confidence to ride sections where others walked their bikes through, yet at the end of the day, my knees and elbows stayed cool and fresh. The pads really conform to the shape of your knee, and really move with you as you pedal - almost invisible feeling, and I never felt the need to slide them down to my shins (for comfort or cooling) on long climbs. Sure, there are burlier pads out there, but if you don't wear em' because they're hot and uncomfortable, there's no point in 'extra' protection. As for the fit, I measured above the knee 19/20" or so, and on the size chart I'd wear a Large. But - Dainese recommends for these pads to go down one size, and I ordered Medium for both elbow and knee. The fit is perfect. They felt a bit tight my first ride, but have relaxed a bit. They should feel a bit snug, but the 4-way stretch material allows maximum comfort, yet the pads won't slide down. It's a bit weird ordering one size down, but that suggestion was right on target. Pads I was considering were: IXS Flow Evo, Leatt Airflex, 7iDP Sam Hill Lite and the Kali Strike pads. It all boiled down to Dainese's incredible pad design that flows a ton of air. Glad I got em

the best!

I've searched high and low for knee pads that can be worn on all day cross country rides in the heat of the humid east coast summer. These are the winners. These feel like almost nothing on. I have occasionally gotten a little chaffing on the back of my knee but it's an ok tradeoff for all day comfort otherwise. I have no issue wearing these on 90 degree humid days. I only once had an issue with them not staying up. Another nice thing is that the top comes up high enough on your leg that you can wear it with spandex (cool I know but on the hottest days this is the most comfortable) or tuck them under your liner shorts and not get any weird skin gaps. Ordering a backup pair for sure. I may size down and see how that fits since mine are just a tiny bit bigger than I prefer

I went from the Dakine slayer to these and boy, oh-boy! These things are not only light, but so comfortable. You can feel the breeze from every angle on this pad. Riding in the Arizona heat, I need breathable protection. Make sure you really measure. A large was falling down on me at the top of the thigh.
