Why We Like The Cervelo ZFS-5 120 GX Transmission Mountain Bike
For the days we have to put in the miles and want to go fast but still need a capable bike, we go with the Cervelo ZFS-5 mountain bike. With a lightweight frame and a super-efficient suspension platform, the ZFS-5 is a cross-country bike that is race-ready. Designed around a single-pivot, flex stay suspension, the ZFS-5 converts every ounce of energy we put into the pedals into forward momentum to give us a super efficient and fast cross-country bike, plus the efficient-rolling 29-inch wheels keep our speed maintained when rolling over rocks and roots. With 115mm of rear travel, the ZFS-5 can tame drops, small jumps, or whatever else we encounter on today's modern courses. This version of the ZFS-5 comes with a 120mm fork that boosts the capability even more, giving the head tube angle a slack 66.6 degrees so we are more stable and composed when the trails get steeper. An efficient 75-degree seat tube angle allows for efficient and powerful pedaling when climbing uphill, and size-specific chainstays give us an elegant and balanced ride for every size frame. An integrated chainstay and downtube protector protects our frame from chain slap and rock strikes, and two water bottle mounts allow us to stay hydrated when we are in the saddle for multiple hours.
The 120 GX Eagle Transmission AXS build of the Cervelo ZFS-5 comes complete with the most advanced tech in the electronic drivetrain market, upgraded suspension capability, and a great value. Cervelo's carbon frame is made of premium materials, giving us the stiffest and lightest weight frame possible for precise handling and reliability. SRAM's GX Eagle Transmission AXS drivetrain gives us a more budget-friendly version f the best shifting electronic drivetrain on the market, complete with a huge gear range, and a near indestructible constriction RaceFace's ARC Offset 27 alloy rims and DT Swiss's 370 hubs combine to make a race-worthy wheelset that is lightweight, durable, and ready to compete. SRAM's new Level Silver Stealth, 4-piston brakes supply vast amounts of stopping power, and premium Maxxis Rekon tires give us the traction and grip we need while keeping the rolling resistance to a minimum. A RockShox SIDLuxe Select+ rear shock keeps us in traction with the ground when things get rowdy and features a compression switch so we can stiffen it up when climbing. A 120mm RockShox SID Select+ fork helps keep the weight down, soaks up the big hits and has a 3-position damper so we can climb more efficiently out of the saddle.
*Due to a high demand in the global supply chain and bike industry since the start of the pandemic, material weight and exact components are subject to change. We are working diligently to keep tech specs updated, and any adjustments will be of equal or better spec level. Fantastic and Versatile XC BIke
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
- Size Bought:
- Medium
- Height:
- 5' 7"
- Weight:
- 128
My daughter outgrew her previous XC race bike and so we did a lot of research and review comparisons between the popular offerings. This "trail" version of the Cervelo ZFS-5 matched all of her criteria and it's also just cool seeing such an iconic brand now in the mountain bike world. The deals on these have made these no-brainers, really. A couple of things I will note: A size medium comes with 175mm cranks and I felt that was a bit too long for my daughter so we purchased a 170mm crankset with the bike. Competitive Cyclist sent the bike with the 170's installed. I think Cervelo really should consider shorter cranks for size medium and small and 170 isn't really all that uncommon. One downside to the trail version is that it doesn't come with a remote lockout but it really does benefit from it. The suspension if very active and my daughter wanted a lockout for race day starts and finishes. Luckily, the SIDLuxe shock is fairly easy to modify with a kit from Rockshox. We also purchased a Bontrager DropLock remote to combine the dropper post remote with the lockout remote in one unit. The 100mm version comes with a remote lockout but not a dropper so you have to pick one or the other. I think both versions would benefit from both a remote lockout and a dropper post. All in all, those things do add up to additional purchases but the price was such a great deal that I won't deduct any starts for that. Stats entered around this review are my daughter's details.

Great lesser known bike
- Familiarity:

Cervelo introduced the zfs-5 for its Jumbo Lotto team riders. I was happy to be able to buy a well equipped bike similar to the Santa Cruz Blur with GX transmission, Sid Select Plus 120 and a beautiful very light carbon full suspension frame at a great price. It is fast uphill and more supple then its suspension numbers down hill. I’ll be riding long days and single track bike-packing. Pleasantly surprised to get a 1400 cc Nalgene in a king cage and a 600 cc standard bottle together in the frame triangle on a size large! Skipping the frame bag I am well equipped with a dry bag off the handlebars and a rear rack and mini panniers. Ready for the Colorado trail ! Well at least the bike is).
