Unrestrained flight.

Though we self-style as competitive cyclists, we don't all share the European peloton's typical preference of bib straps on shorts. Fortunately for those of us who fall into that camp, Castelli manufactures most of its race-ready shorts in both bibbed and non-bibbed models. In the case of the Volo Shorts, this means you can live up to volo's English translation, enjoying the unrestrained flight of bib-free cycling.

The Volo Shorts straddle the line between workhorse and racehorse, falling somewhere between the Endurance X2s (made for — you guessed it — endurance riding) and the Free Aero Races, which have become one of our most beloved shorts over the past few years. Since the Volos are both compressive and aerodynamic, we can only assume that the workhorse racer label refers to their durability — a quality valued by those who like their shorts to last longer than one race.

The shorts are a blend of Affinity Lycra and Affinity BLC fabrics, both of which increase the shorts' affinity for keeping you comfortable and warding off fatigue with their high stretch on the inner thighs, aerodynamic texturing on the outer thigh, and gentle compression throughout. And unlike many other offerings that share a tier with the Volo Shorts, the Affinity legs are finished with Castelli's Giro Air leg band. This wide swath of material keeps the fit secure without resorting to the usual tricks: pinching elastic inserts and silicone grip print that wears off in the laundry.

The shorts ride on the comfort of a KISS Air chamois, which takes the less-is-more approach for unobtrusive, non-bulky comfort. The ischial zone gets the lion's share of dual-density padding, while the sensitive perineum is protected by a relieving channel. The padding tapers to a clean finish at the edges, eliminating seams and ridges created by sudden topographical changes. The soft, bacteriostatic cover stretches to move with your body in the saddle. The shorts are finished with reflective detailing just above the leg bands in the back, which helps keep you visible in low-light conditions.

Husband Loves Them

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Size Bought: XL

I bought these as a surprise for my husband. He probably would not buy such high-end shorts for himself so I did. He loves everything about them. He averages about 200 miles a week in the summer and 6 hours plus on the trainer a week in the winter. He says they are super comfortable, loves the chamois and really likes the fabric. We were recently riding in the hot desert sun. I could feel the heat sizzling on the back of my black standard lycra shorts, he said he did not even notice the heat. He says the only negative is that the legs ride up a bit on him. I actually think I could have bought him a size smaller. I bought XL, as everyone stated they run small and I know with Women's shorts they tend to run small. I do notice that he has some bunching in the legs, so probably a tighter fit would fix the riding up issue. He still loves them.

Great shorts!

They get a little warm, but the padding is worth it. I just wear them in the cooler days

    Hubby Loves them

I bought these for my husband. He usually wears a Large, but bought XL base on other reviews and product recommendations. He says these are one of his favorites, if not his very favorite. These also happen to be his first pair of Castelli. His other favorite is Garneau. He likes that they are supportive, but not overly restrictive and loves the chamois. I really like the look and color. The fabric is very nice and the lighter color will be nice when summer temperatures sizzle.

    Leg grippers

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: Large

I’m with the other guy that said the leg grippers don’t work well. Too lose and no stretch. I always get 1 size bigger in castelli. Usually a medium but got large. Fit well everyplace but leg grippers

    Castelli Volo Short -- Comfy/Stylish

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: Runs small
    • Size Bought: XXL

Fast shipping. High quality, comfy, and stylish. I may order more in other colors. Tacky material towards bottom of shorts grips thighs for a perfect fit yet is always comfortable. Zero complaints.

These are my go to shorts. They are fantastic. Fit perfect, look great, and great chamois. They run small. I wear a Large in almost all bike shorts and the XL fit me perfect. I have a 34" waist. Spend the money. They are worth it.

    Easy Breezy

    • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
    • Fit: Runs large
    • Size Bought: XL

First off, I love the look of these shorts. I got them in a white and love them but also would love to pick up a pair in the black as well.
They are super lite, airy, and comfy. I have a size 33-34 waist with more of an athletic build with bigger thighs and calves. I saw that it said to size up and I was a bit hesitant to go up from a large(34) to a size LX(36) but I am so glad that I did. The XL fits perfect.

    What the others have said

    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: medium

Yes, these are lightweight, chamois is very comfortable, and they look great. No trouble with the leg grippers when the size is correct. Shorts feel a bit tight in the crotch when standing around, but they are very comfortable on the bike. Shorts, especially the chamois, dry very quickly. Highly recommend.

    Nice shorts

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: Large

Great chamois, really comfortable and fresh, the design is really cool as well, I was hesitating about the size after reading through the reviews but i ultimately bought large since that's the size i normally buy, i have two Large pearl izumi shorts that fit great and these shorts fit great too at the same size

    Great for hot weather riding

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size
    • Size Bought: XL

These shorts are very lightweight with a liberal use of a mesh-like fabric making them a good choice for warm temperatures. With that said, the leg grippers do not work well and I found the shorts riding up often. Also, I took the advice of other reviewers and went up a size but that was a mistake. I am 6-2, 180 with a 33 inch waist and the XL was a bit loose.

    Bike shorts

Ordered a few pairs of these shorts because the shamie is excellent. These run slightly small so I went one size up. Really nice shorts

      Great for summer riding

Comfortable and cool. I have tried several Castelli shorts, these are excellent. I have bought several of these shorts.

These are extremely comfortable and have a great chamois. I have Castelli bibs and find that these stay in place just as well but without any of the chafing or inconvenience bibs cause.
