Not everyone has the determination to ride outdoors through winter, especially in places where winter means an average monthly snowfall near 60 inches, like at our home office in Park City, Utah, or temperatures colder than the face of Mars, like in Minnesota circa early 2014. While some of us at Competitive are that determined, many are not; however, we still want to maximize the time that we can ride before the temperatures get below freezing, and the Castelli Velocissimo 2 Knickers help us do just that.
The Velocissimo 2 Knickers are built for soft, warm, stretchy comfort thanks to Thermoflex fabric, a staple across Castelli's cold-weather line. Thermoflex's brushed lining keeps the cold out and wicks moisture without irritating your skin. The bib straps are made from mesh, so they offer more stretch than you'll find in a heavier winter garment, and the KISS3 chamois insert affords enough comfort for all your form-maintenance or base-building needs. The fit is snug and un-bulky, so they're ideal for cooler races.
Castelli recommends these knickers for use between 57 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit, but, as with most of their gear, we find that they grossly underestimate the bottom-end of the temperature range for the Velocissimo 2. These tights ride quite comfortably into the low 50s or even the high 40s, depending on the individual. They're especially useful in high-effort situations like cyclocross races, ensuring you don't overheat after the first lap.
The Castelli Velocissimo 2 Knickers are available in six sizes ranging from Small to XXX-Large in the colors Black and Black/white.
