Sorpasso RoS Wind Bib Tight

When subfreezing temperatures come to town, the list of your basic needs moves into bold text with lots of underlining. Castelli aims to keep you rolling through harsh, winter base miles, regardless of the conditions with the new Sorpasso RoS Wind Bib Tight, which acts as cycling’s equivalent of a windshield and a deep-winter heater. GORE-TEX Infinium Windstopper fabric is sewn into the frontal area and thighs, providing wind protection for your quests down to 23-degrees F. Making up the rest of the RoS Wind is a mix of Nano Flex 3G and Xtra Dry to hold in the warmth while maximizing breathability and water-repellency from passing showers or sleet. Castelli claims these are the best tights fabrics they’ve engineered, and with sub-freezing protection that also breathes enough to perform up to 46-degree F, we certainly would agree.

Castelli uses the performance-tuned Progetto X2 Air chamois to help you with the extended base miles January requires, and the lie-flat bib straps with mesh backing add to the hours-long comfort you’d expect from Castelli. Low-light visibility is enhanced by the reflective calf stripes, which double as zipper guards.

Impossibly cold and thus uncomfortable.

These have amazing wind protection and thick fleece on the front but seem to be engineered to allow all the heat you generate out the back. No warmth seems to be trapped. This is the same design on the product just below this one that doesn't have the wind stopping material but those are much thinner and seem to have no reason for existing at all. I've never been so uncomfortable on a ride as with these. They are nicely made, and fit great in a M for me. Nice materials, just the wrong material on the back. I've got a two pairs, now, of the Nano Flex Pro bib shorts because they are warm and really nice but hard to come by because they actually work if you want to be warm. I'd like to get a set of them in bib tights but they're gone. CS doesn't seem to be interested in carry the Nano Flex Pro, though.

Top end bib tights with a pad you forget

Goods: The first padded bib tight to ever impress me. I am 6'1" /175 and XL fit beautifully. Have experiences ranging 29F/14-24mph winds as well as 40F with wind and deluge rain, RoS is real. These are the perfect bib tights for the fast group ride or the Zones 4&5 solo roll. I choose these tights first, and I have plenty of choices! Others: Cold- if you are looking for deep-winter windy warmth in the solo ride of 16-18 mph, then these are not for you. Why? Look closely at the pictures of the bib tights&notice the wind layer covering thighs and the narrow racing stripe over the crotch&the wind covering material skips the rest of the pelvis and hips&burrrrr! The tradeoff is immense movement comfort on the joints, including the hips. Further, this buys you happiness at the high end of the temperature range. If you need more warmth, look to the Polare 2 from Castelli instead. Rain- "water repellency" is what Castelli offers, and I can happily validate. Mist or light snow are zero problem. However, medium rain saturates the knees and hips after an hour and water drains toward your shoes from the inside.

Watch out for length issues

I am 6'2", 190# and bought a XXL based on other Castelli bib tights I have owned in the past. Tights work great for rides mid 20's. Paneling on upper thigh is Gore windstopper material and works great at keeping me warm. Typically, when cycling in conditions in the mid 20-mid30's, its the glutes, abdomen, and upper thigh that gets cold. Not in these, looks like Castelli has more robust materials in those areas, so great design there, However, the leg length on these is way too short. I may be an outlier in terms of inseam at 34.5", but these tights are at least 2-3 inches short. Not even long enough to cover my shoe booties, so I have a gap that allows air, and more importantly, water to get in. Overall fit with the XXL is not compressive, barely snug, but I couldn't imagine getting any shorter leg length. Can never understand why these cycling clothing companies can't get the lengths correct on their gear. I mean what is the issue with making the leg length on a pair of winter cycling bibs longer to insure that there is maximum coverage down to the ankle?
