Classic style, winter performance.

The winter cap is the secret weapon of European-based pros. Also known as the mutt, these caps drop cotton construction in favor of man-made fibers to provide insulation and wick moisture away from your head. They also add a knitted earflap to keep your ears warm in biting wind.

The Castelli Risvolto Winter Cap is one of those hard-to-find Euro-style mutts. Constructed from polyester, the cap uses a polypropylene liner to improve insulation and wick moisture. The earflap folds up and out of the way in case the day warms noticeably. While some mutts are too bulky to wear under a helmet, the Risvolto Winter Cap will fit beneath your helmet with just a slight loosening of your helmet’s chin strap and occipital retention device.

The Castelli Risvolto Winter Cap comes in Black/red, Black/white, and Red/white and one size fits all.

one size fits "small".

  • Fit: Runs small

I wear a 7 3/8 fitted hat, so it's not an unusually large head. This cap does not fit. Hoping it had some "stretch" to it, I pulled just a bit and heard the seams pop. So, not the greatest construction / materials either.

Toasty Warm

Love this hat. Works much better than the merino wool beanie that I've used for years mainly due to better ear coverage. I wear a medium helmet and this hat is a bit snug and also brim rides a bit low unless flipped up. That said, it's still my "go to" when it's cold.

As snug as a bug in a rug.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Riding in the winter is not the most fun; your ears freeze on those really cold days and your head can feel frozen after a fast decent. Luckily, this hat is fleece lined so your dome and ears stay toasty enough for a long days ride. I've been out on 2 hour long rides with this cap and stayed perfectly warm. Pair this with a CC face cowl and you're golden.

Warm hat, snug fit

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This Castelli Risvolto cap really does keep your noggin warm. I keep one tucked in my back pocket for most winter rides since coming down from the mountains can be chilly. I really like the warmth and, for what its worth, the styling is pretty cool. I have a medium sized head (literally, a medium in most any helmet), but I still found this cap to be a little tighter than ideal out of the box. It fits cleanly under a helmet, but it took a little breaking in despite being one size fits all. As much as I had aspirations of looking cool off the bike in the coffee shop, this cap is a little too racey for post-ride apparel in my opinion so I'll stick with a beanie. All said, a useful piece of apparel, and would buy again.

Awesome cap, but...

I love this hat. It's warm enough for 20F days/nights, it wicks, the fit is just snug enough & the full coverage around the back of my head is terrific. The ear flaps are perfect. The only thing preventing this from being PERFECT is the brim. With it 'down', it's too low and restricts my vision a bit too much for comfort. With it flipped up, that's better - but this is difficult to do with a helmet on. Over time, the helmet pushes the front of the cap down onto my brow in a way that's both annoying and difficult to 'fix' - even temporarily - with heavy winter gloves on. I'm here on the site looking for the exact same hat sans brim, but I don't know if one exists. If you ride without a helmet? The above won't apply and this is a great choice for a cold-weather cap. I'm just not comfortable going without a lid, particularly at a time when roads can be icy. YMMV

Wasn't sure how warm this would be, but it is perfect. When it is super cold and windy and 25 or below a balaclava really has to happen. Otherwise, this gets it done.

maybe for a hipster to wear.

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this hat thinking it would be sweet for windy cold winter days and the first time I wore it my head froze. It fits snug, but the bill kind of blocks my field of view. The material lets all of the cold air through and freezes my head once I start sweating. I even tried wearing it over a scull cap and still thought it was a poor hat for winter cycling and decided it must have been designed for a hipster to wear on his way to the coffee shop on a fixie.

I own a Pearl Izumi and a Sugoi skull cap. I like them both except that they tend to ride up on the ears. I bought the Castelli Risvolto thinking my problem was solved. Wrong. Not only did the flaps ride up but the bill impaired my vision especially in the drops. I have a medium sized head and the Risvolto fit really tight. Might stretch a bit after wearing a few more times but not likely since I like to see where I am going especially in the winter.

    Great cycling hat

Super warm, fits under my helmet well. At first was a bit snug (7 1/2 hat size) but after some use and a bit of stretching, now is comfy for all day use.

My ears are super sensitive to the wind and I have tried other skull caps under my helmet to try and keep me warm but they would always rise up. I love this hat it keeps my ears warm and cuts out the wind. I would recommend this hat to anyone that wants the combo of a hat and beanie

I ride 50+ miles 2x a week in the Pacific Northwest. Have used this cap in 30 deg. up through 60 dg. it works great! My head and ears stay warm. I have worn it the rain without a helmet cover, and my head was still dry. It wicks away sweat very effectively, so my head stays warm, which means my core stays warm. The styling is very stylish!

      Risvolto Cap

Nice cap. Good quality. Have used it on days as cold as 30 deg and it's kept my head comfortably warm. Helmet straps need minor adjustment for comfortable fit. The ear flaps are snug and not too tight.

        Made in China.

I wish it were the ear-covering portion was 1 cm longer. My ear lobes are slight exposed and I have regular proportioned ears.

          Great winter cycling cap

This is a great accessory to have it you want to do any winter riding. Fleece lined, with ear flaps that fold up, along with a bill, this hat was exactly what I was looking for to get me through those long winter rides. This hat is also thin enough to fit under my helmet perfectly. I'm very happy with my purchase and the only negative was waiting this long!

Great winter cap for the money!

the seam between the ear flap and the cap isn't the greatest or smoothest transition. not on the level of "look" as rapha or assos, but for the money im more than happy. i've worn this from 20-45 deg and it's done me so well. 45 is about the upper limit (for me) temperature wise with the ear flaps over my ears. i can wear this under my helmet, but it's it's biggest adjustability. if your helmet is already there without a cap under it, the risvolto might not work for you.

Which caps or hats are designed to be worn...

Which caps or hats are designed to be worn under a helmet?

These might work, but this is what I suggest:

The wind stopper in the front is ideal!

              Best Answer

the Castelli Risvolto Winter Cap is great if you want the wind stopper and warmth for your ears etc and you also enjoy wearing a cap year round. I have used skull caps under my helmet and they tend to rise up by my ears and I lose the protection and warmth

This hat fits snug and is the perfect winter hat
