Castelli describes the ideal conditions for the Dolomiti X-Lite Men's Jacket as far from ideal: when "rain threatens to turn the ride into a fight for survival." Sitting in the dry warmth of the Competitive office, this seems like so much hyperbole; however, when we're caught out in the rain with nothing to keep our core dry, a training ride quickly descends into the doom and gloom of cold, wet cycling.
The Dolomiti X-Lite helps prevent those doldrums in two ways. First, it's made from Pertex Shield, a fully waterproof fabric that keeps the wet out at a rating of 20,000mm—that's about as good as it gets this side of neoprene. The seams are fully taped and the zipper is waterproof, eliminating any easy ingress to would be watery intruders.
The jacket's second biggest feature is its size, or the lack thereof. Despite that huge water protection, the Dolomiti X-Lite packs down to fit in a jersey pocket, so you can stow it pre-ride as an emergency policy or start out in it and take it off as conditions improve. If you're in a situation where you can't immediately remove it, the jacket's amazing 40,000 g/m² breathability rating means it may be the most breathable rain jacket we carry.
