Aero meets lightweight.

When looking at the POC Octal Aero Helmet, you probably wouldn’t guess that it’s part of the brand’s first wave of road equipment. It’s simply too feature rich, and too refined to be a freshman effort, right? Well, the brand in question already rewrote the book on snowsports helmets, and then did the same thing in the world of mountain biking. And drawing on the experience of professional teams, as well as passionate racers within its own doors, POC has come up with an aero helmet that’s not just fast, but comfortable and surprisingly lightweight — not to mention incredibly protective.

Part of the key to the Octal’s protection comes from the way that POC placed protective EPS foam around the wearer’s head. As compared to many other featherweight helmets, the Octal offers greater coverage by extending down to cover the back of the head, as well as the temples. As a result, it gives the sensation that it’s sitting around your head, rather than being perched on top of it. You might think that this combination of low weight and increased footprint are a recipe for a helmet that’s fragile, but the oversized vent skeleton has allowed POC to maintain ample thickness of the EPS foam all the way around your head. It has the added benefit of lending the Octal significant airflow, thanks to the thoughtful vent placement at the front of the helmet. In other words, you won’t have to suffer with overheating just because you want to save energy.

In addition to the shell shape, there are a host of less noticeable, but no less impressive, details throughout. Take for instance the low-profile click wheel retention strap. It’s highly refined, no doubt due to POC’s extensive experience in the snowsports arena. Showing similar refinement, the straps are molded directly into the shell. But you’d have a hard time overlooking the aerodynamic shell that encases the Octal Aero. As you probably guessed, it helps to minimize aerodynamic turbulence as air moves around your head, which makes you faster. But what you may not have guessed is that this aero benefit comes at only a 20g weight penalty in comparison to the standard Octal, which, considering the added efficiency, more than warrants the extra material.

The POC Octal Aero Helmet is available in sizes Small (250g), Medium (270g), and Large (305g), and in the colors Garmin Blue, Helium White, and Zink Orange.
