Not much separates the Mavic Cosmic Carbone 40 Elite Wheelset and the more expensive Cosmic Carbone 40 C wheels. The two key differences are that the Carbone 40's hub bodies and skewers are alloy instead of carbon and titanium, respectively. That means the Elites do make stiffness and weight concessions, but they're so minor as to be virtually undetectable to all but the most discerning veterans of the peloton. Besides those two material differences, the Elites are virtually the same as their higher-priced brothers.
One of the Carbone 40 Elites' strongest selling points is that they're the least expensive wheel in Mavic's aerodynamic line that benefits from the French manufacturer's TgMax rim tempering and construction process. The process begins with an alloy spine, which is fleshed out by multiple layers of different resins and 3K carbon fabrics. This is then cured and tempered to bind the materials and realign the carbon fiber crystals so the rims can withstand significantly higher braking temperatures without the structural failures that have plagued carbon wheels in the past. The process represents the ideal combination of the reliability of alloy, the weight and stiffness benefits of carbon, and the aerodynamic properties of deep rims.
After they're cured, the rims go under the drill press for the spoke holes. Normally, this drilling would create a stress point, but Mavic added threaded aluminum inserts under the lower, carbon rim bed to secure the wheel's spokes. This also means that the upper rim bed remains intact and blemish-free, for even more reliability under braking and from the occasional user error (read: crash).
It's fair to suggest that the 40 millimeter rims may be the most common at non-hill climb events, because they strike a swank balance between weight, aerodynamics, and not acting like sails in crosswinds. These versatile rims are laced to Mavic's proprietary hubs, which incorporate the FTS-L system. FTS-L uses steel inserts to reinforce the area where force is transferred from the pawl to the hub, which makes energy transfer more efficient and better distributes the pedal load throughout the entire wheel rather than focusing stress on a few, vulnerable areas. The wheelset is topped off with Mavic's own Pro Griplink and Power link tires. They combine hard, efficient center strips with grippy side strips to maximize speed and cornering.
