In the lead-up to the new model year, Campagnolo spent a lot of time redesigning its three top mechanical groupsets, so the nigh-perfect shifting of the Record 11 EPS (Electronic Power Shift) Front Derailleur's smart, precise, and corrective operation remains unchanged. After all, this model took 20 years to develop, and it's the result of an R&D cycle that wasn't satisfied until the product matched the ever-evolving vision. So while we're sure there will be updates in the future, we're equally confident that Campy will take the time to make sure those updates are, in fact, improvements.

The Record 11 EPS Front Derailleur is a technological marvel. Like Campagnolo's Record 11 EPS Rear Derailleur, it operates on an electronic actuator comprised of a gear motor and an electronic sensor. Where it differs is in the details. The gear motor for the front derailleur's electronic actuator was developed with a Swiss company that manufactures electric motors for space missions to Mars, so it's not just space age — it's space worthy. Its high over-torque transmission results in precise, strong pulls, and the Magnetic Hall Sensor Resolver technology uses an internal sensor to automatically center the derailleur on the chain. It also communicates with the rear derailleur via the D.T.I. technology, which auto-trims the front to avoid chain rub, regardless of the gear combination.

There are some differences between the Record and Super Record EPS front derailleurs, but they're small. Record 11 has alloy chainguide plates instead of carbon, and steel motor mounts instead of alloy. While this does result in a slight weight gain, there's a corresponding drop in price and no loss of functional performance, and Campagnolo has spent a great deal of time on the Record 11 EPS front derailleur to guarantee that function by addressing the effects of road noise and maximizing rigidity.

The derailleur's co-molded frame mounting hardware consists of an aluminum polymer blend, and the external derailleur rod, which works in conjunction with the electronic actuator, is held by a hollow hub and double wing with a double-finned pin for maximum precision through stiffness. The actuator itself is housed in a cascade gearbox that, along with the vibration-damping technopolymer-carbon body, minimizes vibration and allows movement to be transferred precisely.

One of our favorite features of EPS is that you can tune it in the saddle using controls on the shifter body, near the thumb lever. This enables the derailleur to make seven incremental adjustments, at 0.1mm per adjustment. The Record 11 EPS front derailleur is also IP67 compliant, a rigid international standard for electronics that requires protection of electronic components from water and dust alike, operating perfectly while submerged under water for 30 minutes.

Campagnolo's EPS groups do retain some technologies from their mechanical counterpart, chief among these being the familiar Extreme Performance Shifting Systems (XPSS). XPSS comprises eight up-shift sectors of the large chainring and two down-shift sectors of the small ring to ensure the smoothest and most direct chain transfer possible, so the burden for fast, precise shifting isn't all on the derailleur's shoulders.
