858 NSW Carbon Clincher Disc Brake Road Wheel

Zipp knew it could and should bring the radical biomimicry-derived 454 NSW Carbon Clincher wheels to deeper depths, fueling the wants and needs of the aero and tri crowd. It proved that aero efficiency and crosswind stability are not mutually exclusive when it comes to aero wheels. With that in mind, Zipp crafted a Sawtooth rim design going 24mm deeper than the 454 and arrived at the 858 NSW Carbon Clincher Disc Brake Road Wheel. It delivers even greater gains in aero efficiency while providing crosswind stability that was previously unthinkable in conventional deep section wheel designs. By eliminating concerns over handling, the 858 NSW ushers in a new era where aerodynamically efficient deep wheels can be ridden every day on any terrain.

The 858's versatility is helped by its lightweight and laterally stiff rims, which provide accelerations that were only thought possible from low profile rims. Those gains are mirrored by the Centerlock disc brakes, which deliver superior modulation and impressive stopping power in all weather conditions. Zipp's NSW-exclusive Cognition Disc-brake hubs roll super efficiently, whether coasting or under power, because the Axial Clutch allows the freehub’s ratcheting mechanism to deliver as low as half the mechanical drag of a conventional three pawl hub system. Assembled with Swiss bearings made to Zipp's exacting specifications, the Cognition hubset is both robust and fast. The wheels also travel well by means other than a bicycle—the center locking disc brake interface is light and it's quick and easy to remove rotors for travel and J-bend spokes help you find a replacement if you're far away from home.

Rim design is the heart of an aero wheelset, and Zipp NSW’s SawTooth design is that heart. The variable depth 77/82mm rims on this set were developed by looking at nature and engineering a design, a process known as biomimicry. This pushed the development process of SawTooth in the wind tunnel, CFD, and real-world testing. What resulted was a rim shape that took one of nature’s most elegant designs and combined engineering precision to deliver a wheel that performs, unlike others. This newly patented rim shape achieves something conventional aero wheels cannot; it simultaneously reduces both aerodynamic drag and side forces. Sawtooth accomplishes this with a series of fin-shaped Hyperfoil nodes along the inner diameter of the rim that work together with the new HexFin ABLC dimples for improved airflow. These dimples stabilize the handling in gusting wind by increasing wind vortex shedding frequency. The higher frequency vortex shedding produced by Sawtooth creates a greater number of smaller, less powerful, and more predictable vortices leading to greater wheel stability. This added stability translates into greater rider control, thereby saving energy that is typically expended trying to hold a line on the aerobars in gusting winds. The result is a faster, more confident ride regardless of the terrain or conditions.

Of course, covering up all this tech with decals would do these wheels and all of the engineer's work a great disservice. That's why Zipp has employed ImPress graphics technology that prints graphics directly on the wheel, allowing the dimples to do what they were designed to do: control the rate at which air sheds off the wheel. Managing this is crucial to stability. ImPress graphics also give the NSW wheels a distinctive stealthy look that complements any bike.

This all adds up to Zipp achieving its highest performing wheelset to date in both aero-drag reduction and reduced side force at all wind yaw angles. This is important because, at higher wind yaw angles, bike handling is most affected by the wind. These wheels are designed for TT or triathlon applications, and the 858 NSW’s advanced aero efficiency, crosswind stability, responsive handling, and unrivaled braking usher in a new era of deep section aero wheels. These wheels are handcrafted in the USA and are available with Campy, Shimano/SRAM, and SRAM XD freehub bodies.
