302 Carbon Clincher Disc Road Wheel

If you have always fancied a set of Zipp Carbon Clinchers but simply couldn't swing the price of admission, Zipp has concocted a wheelset that might pique your interest and bring more mid-depth carbon clinchers to the masses. And whether you are building up a new bike or simply want to outfit your drop bar disc bike with some blinging new rolling stock, have a look at Zipp's 302 Carbon Clincher Disc Road Wheels. These wheels are built to be ridden daily and can withstand the rigors of cyclocross and gravel grinding as well.

Wheels are where you can make some of the biggest performance upgrades on your bike. Lighter rotational mass helps any time the pedals are turned in anger especially when climbing. Getting wheels with an aerodynamic advantage help too and help you sail along once you are up to speed, saving valuable watts throughout the ride.

Zipp had the opportunity to create the 302 with reappropriated 303 rims when the new wheelset received Firecrest and NSW treatment. What does that mean for you? The 302 wheelset is constructed from the same carbon fiber rim ridden to victory in the sport's most beautiful classsics. The rim is also known as an all-arounder suiting rouleurs to a t with it light enough for climbing, aero for the flats and plenty stiff for sprinting. This rim is 45mm deep, with a blunt-edged spoke bed and going 25.6mm at the brake track. Internal width on this clincher is 16.25mm.

Unlike the newer 303s this rim lacks dimples. We are not sure what marginal gains exist here but Zipp is the only company doing it and it they felt compelled enough in its utter aero dominance it would be on every one of their wheelsets. One area you won't be giving up anything to the new wheels is in the braking surface. As these are disc brake rims and hubs, you will be relying on your rotors and not the new fancy textures and materials on the rims to slow you down.

Spokes are 24-hole count, two cross front and rear. The spokes have external Sapim Secure-Lock brass nipples for serviceability and Sapim CX-Sprint bladed spokes. J-bend spokes are nice to see here since this is something almost any bike shop will be in supply of so if you do break or damage a spoke most shops will have parts to get the wheels rolling again.

To keep the wheels light and easy to service it uses a center locking brake rotor mounting interface on the 76D/176D hubs. The 76D/176D hubset also has replaceable axle end caps for thru-axle compatibility. This version features a SRAM/Shimano 10/11-speed cassette body. Campagnolo and XDR driver bodies are available separately.

These wheels come with quick release skewers and rim tape. End caps are easily removable and allow adapting the wheels to 12 x100mm and 15 x 100mm front thru-axles, and 12 x 135 and 12 x 142mm rear thru-axles. Tire widths narrower than 23mm are not recommended, though you can go pretty much as wide as you want, so long as the tire fits the 700c diameter. But feel free to throw on CX and gravel tires.
