I was gifted a new wheelset from my better half. During the shipping interval, I decided these new wheels deserved the perfect environement for their introduction. I put new chainrings, chain, cassette, tires, shifter and brake cables as well as housing. I rolled the dice on this Yokozuna after A LOT of product research - although a touch more expensive than some other brands. I am so grateful I gave them a chance. On installation, the cable housing feels stiff. I would definitely recommend measuring 3 times and cutting once, yet that is only to be sure the housing can make all the bends and achieve the same "angles" as your old set. I had to make some tiny/small adjustments in length to be sure that entry into significant points (calibers and derailleurs) were as straight/linear as possible. My diligence and precision has been greatly rewarded. I was able to get my braking precisely bang on to where I like it, nice and tight to the rim and ready to stop on a dime as needed. The shifting was silky smooth and responsive. Paired with my Shimano Ultegra drivetrain, everything has been so satisfying. I am running on 2 wheelsets now based on my anticipated ride, and moving back and forth between an 11-28 and 11-32 is quite painless. (I expected to have to make some small adjustments in rear indexing each time. I'm honestly not sure what the norm is on this aspect.) The shifting across both wheelsets and cassettes is magical-quiet, smooth and quick. Everything shifts well if I get caught in the wrong gear ratio on a new route. I like to do my own maintenance work when feasible, and I am grateful that I put the work into the Yokozuna set of cables and cable housing. The satisfaction of bringing about that improved level of performance is blissful. I love these cables. Safe riding!!!

Top rate shifting cables

10,000-20,000 kms these cables are so performance a very close second to the defunct (sadly) Gore. They are so precise that, from 20 to 30C, RD needs x2 1/4 turns to tighten as they react to heat. Then they are good for the duration of summer. Low maintenance. Never brake. Elite level effort, power and speed, abuse. Never fail. As for braking, on Shimano DA 9000 and Ultegra 6700 they do a descent job. Perhaps the braking cables could be better, but they never failed. It is also a general DA 9000 reality- braking was not as powerful or firm as other systems. 9100 is supposed to be better. A key observation is that whether at 5,000, 10,000 or 15,000 kms, if you examine the Yoko shifting cables, they have NO elastic deformation near the BB or levers. 400 kms of top Jagwire and they were permanently bent and unresponsive. Pull them out, they round up, no bends. They come pre-stretched woven, top grade Japanese steel. On par quality with Campy, but Campy does not fit Shimano… Since they are not polymer coating, no gunk or fraying polymers to slow down shifting (Shimano cables....). Yes, they are pricey initially, but 40$ USD for tens of thousands of Kms, what would one expect? at 10,000 kms it is 4 cents per km, 20,000 = 2 cents per km AND THEY KEEP AT IT...

Improved braking performance but pricey!

This kit adequately covers the full length housing needed for discs on my 55cm frame. The brake housings are stiff and remove any squishy feeling from my TRP Spyre + 105 combo. They are so stiff that they are a bit difficult to wrap down when taping the bar, and as others have indicated, the outer plastic is not very durable. Overall they work, but I think I will try the Jagwire Pro in the future just to see if the cost is worth it.

great performance/durability issues

definitely improved braking performance on my campagnolo-equipped road bike. didn't notice a difference in shifting over typical cables. plastic on brake cables began splitting and cracking after a couple of months (note: the bike is kept indoors when not riding). really only got one season out of them. i usually get 2-3 seasons out of a cable set. somewhat disappointing.

The coating on my set of Yokozunas has also started to look beat up and shredded, and I've only just installed them on the bike!

Smooth- Great Upgrade

Equivalent of upgrading to DI2

I have tried every cable out there and nothing compares. Running on a XTR clutch 1x10 and it literally reduced lever friction by 50% compared to any other cable/housing combination I have tried. Feels like butter, almost like the clutch is not turned on

Stiff brake casing affects performance

My rear brake is pushed down by the casing, If I shorten it any further it wont reach. Totally unsatisfied with this purchase.

I know your comment is a bit old, but I'll reply anyway in the hope that others may benefit from my experience. I have used the Yokozuna brake cables only. I found that with SRAM brakes, the housing was too stiff for the run from the rear cable stop to the rear brake. It would tend to push the brake out of alignment. So, I substituted a less stiff bit of housing (Jagwire elite link) for that run. I used the Yokozuna housing for the front brake and the run from the rear brake to the front cable stop. Not an ideal situation, but this has worked well for me. However, I chalk this up to the design of the SRAM brake caliper. I much prefer the latest Shimano brake caliper design, but unfortunately the Shimano calipers are incompatible with SRAM levers due to a mismatch in the required cable pull.

Great for mechanical disc brakes

I switched to Yokozuna's kit on TRP's recommendation when setting up their Hy/Rd disc brakes on my bike to reduce the free stroke throw/travel and mushiness/sponginess feeling at the levers. It didn't fix the throw distance, but helped reduce the mushiness at the levers. I couldn't tell any difference in shifting performance when compared to my previous Jagwire setup. One thing I noticed, after running it through the wet season, is that the internal cables seem to be showing rust, especially because the "Smoke" color housing is see-through. I don't know if this is just cosmetic because I didn't notice any change in braking/shifting performance over time. Other people have reported similar issues: see http://forums.roadbikereview.com/components-wrenching/yokozuna-brake-cable-rust-259153.html This kit is pretty price at nearly $60 for the kit, so I'm only using this for my bike that runs mechanical disc brakes. Nokon provides similar quality but at roughly the same price. Jagwire, Gore, and SRAM SlickWire may be adequate for most setups.

I thought i would add that my smoke cable set also started to oxidize after a few wet weather rides. Now 6 months later almost all of the lines are rusted. The internals are for the most part fine except at a few of the cable stops where the rust is pretty severe.

Not worth it!

I replaced my original Campy cables and housing with the Yoko's and hoped to notice a difference in shifting and braking given the expense. I can't say that I noticed any improvement in performance however after just over one year of minimal use the shift housing has cracked. I noticed cracks near the rear derailleur and also at the handlebars. The original Campy cables and housings lasted over 6 years with about 20,000 miles of use.

Best cables in town!

Okay, maybe "best" is a little dramatic, but the rigid housing does wonders to braking and shifting slack. The housings are robust and there is minimal cable/housing drag. They're pricey but you get great results if you have a bike that has a groupset that is maybe a little slow to shift of have mushy brakes. I've ridden 3000 miles on it thus far and has shown no wear on the housing.

Are these cables MTB compatible for internal routed frames? Is the housing long enough?

Depends on how long your setup is, but there should be enough. The kit I have came with: - 1 x 3500mm brake housing - 1 x 1350mm brake wire - 1 x 2750mm brake wire - 1 x 3000mm shift housing - 2 x 2100mm shift cable and the usual end tips, ferules. My road bike runs internally-routed brake cables but externally-routed shift cables with hybrid mechanical+hydraulic discs. I need at least 2100mm shifter cables to run the full length from front to back.
