Yeti Cycles' 2018 SB5 Turq X01 Eagle Complete Mountain Bike gives you everything you want and need in a modern trail-slaying machine. This SB5 gets a no-nonsense build with a wheelset featuring lightweight DT Swiss XM421 rims that are just as wide as a downhill rim from a couple years ago. They spin on DT Swiss 350 hubs renowned for their reliability. SRAM's excellent X01 Eagle drivetrain provides exacting shifts and a 50t bailout gear. The range on offer with this cassette essentially puts extra chainrings and front derailleurs on the endangered species list. Yeti even specs the X01 Eagle crankset, which is the same crank that comes on the top-dog XX1 build. FOX's top-end Factory fork and shock bring super smooth, bump gobbling, terrain taming travel to both ends with the 34 fork and DPS shock.
This SB5 carries Yeti's TURQ designation, which represents the most advanced frame the company can construct. This means a more precise carbon layup that's carefully molded to reinforce key stress points along the frame without adding any unnecessary bulk. This results in a frameset that has strength where you need it and much appreciated weight reductions where you don't, for a claimed weight savings of 350g compared to the standard SB5 Carbon.
The key to the SB5's great balance lies in its geometry. A 66.5-degree angle and a slightly longer wheelbase and reach team up for increased stability when mobbing down rocky and rooty trails at high speed. To make sure the bike isn't a sleeper, a steep seat tube angle and shorter chainstays keep handling agile and intuitive as you hop across ruts at speed and navigate up loose, steep terrain. A low bottom bracket inspires cornering confidence to let off the brakes and lean the bike over.
The Switch Infinity suspension system is key in providing great quality travel that works with you in every conceivable trail situation. This system's linear path allows it to be much more sensitive to small bumps. Yeti can control the leverage ratio and anti-squat with much greater freedom than other systems. As the rear end compresses, the direction changes, and the DH-inspired slider travels down toward the bottom bracket shell to maintain a steady pedaling platform. This change of direction is smooth, without any weird mid-stroke wallow. Deep in the stroke, it works in conjunction with the upper pivot to produce a vertical wheel path that effortlessly flattens big, square-edged impacts. Up or down the mountain, Switch Infinity continues to impress us with the amount of traction the design offers and the efficiency it maintains.
