Why We Like The SB115 Turq Mountain Bike Frame

Building upon the platform of the esteemed SB100, Yeti's new SB115 gets a bump in travel to—you guessed it—115mm. This is paired with a 130mm fork up front instead of the 120mm fork you'd find on the SB100. The idea is to create a bike that excels at multi-day stage races like the BC Bike Race—the types of rides where you need something more capable than a purebred XC race bike, but a hefty long-and-slack trail bike would just hold you back. The result is a short-travel shredder that climbs just as well as the SB100, but rallies the descents with greater confidence and bravado.

The SB115 shares the same front and rear triangles as the SB100 but uses a revised Switch Infinity link and a longer-stroke rear shock to gain its extra travel. This means the geometry is almost identical to the SB100, with the head angle slackening ever-so-slightly from 67.8 to 67.6-degrees. The reach is a modest 450mm on a size large, with a 74-degree seat tube angle. On paper, these numbers might look a bit conservative, but that's right in line with the goal of this bike—to keep things lively and agile, encouraging quick accelerations and responsive handling on tight, technical racecourses. After all, when you're trying to cover ground as quickly as possible, a long, slacked-out trail bike is probably not the best tool for the job.

Like their other bikes, the SB115 uses Yeti's patented Switch Infinity suspension design. The Switch Link acts as a translating pivot, providing higher anti-squat in the initial travel for class-leading pedaling performance, then moving to a suppler feel as you get deeper into the travel for excellent bump absorption and traction. This particular bike takes advantage of Yeti's TURQ carbon fiber layup, using the highest quality materials to ensure the perfect balance of stiffness and compliance, as well as a 225g weight savings over Yeti's C-series carbon. For good measure, the frame is backed by a lifetime warranty so you can charge the trails with absolute confidence.

Perfect East Coast Trail Bike

I’m blown away by how good all around the SB115 is. As a point of reference, I’m coming from a Santa Cruz Tallboy 2 that I have ridden for 6 years on typical East coast single track trails. Back to the SB115. Climbing. Very efficient on long steady seated climbs and shorty punchy ones. I leave the fork and shock in the open position and there is little to no pedal bob. Firm pedaling platform. On technical climbs, the tremendous traction in the rear allows you to lean forward more in keeping the front end down. Descending. Very capable. This bike offers a large margin for error. Of you didn’t pick the best line, no problem. It’s a very fun and poppy bike. Easy to catch air. Cornering, this thing rails. Lean it into the berms and corners and it just grips. So confidence inspiring that I find myself going way faster than I had planned. I’m glad I went with the 4 piston SRAM G2 RSC brakes. Codes would not be inappropriate on this bike. It’s not quite as agile as my Tallboy2 on really tight stuff like switchbacks, but the SB115 is better in all other aspects. I’m setting new PRs (by several minutes on 1 hour loops). The thing about the SB115. Ride it casually and it feels like any other bike; the front end will even wander just a tad. It needs to be ridden a bit aggressively to get the most out of it. Weighting the front tire in the berms and really leaning the bike will reward you with amazing traction, stability, and speed. For the trails that I ride, I would not want a longer slacker bike than this. I did a custom build via the CC bike builder. It’s awesome because you can select the components you want. For example, I really don’t like the stock wheels on the Yeti build (heavy and slow engagement). I went with I9 1/1 trail s wheels. I came out ahead on price. Also a huge shout out to my gear head Kyle Brown. This is the second bike that he’s helped me out with. Kyle is extremely knowledgeable, honest, and responsive in his communication. His after sales customer service in dealing with any issues is truly remarkable.
