Description

SingleSpeed Hitch Rack

Yakima designed the SingleSpeed Hitch Rack for cyclists regularly carrying only a single bike, whether they're moving across the country or simply driving to the trail head to crush miles of technical singletrack. Inspired by the larger HoldUp in design, the SingleSpeed features a StrongArm hook that clamps securely over your front wheel and tire—all without contacting your carbon frame or scratching precious paint on your frame. The rear strap ratchets in place to hold down the rear wheel, so it doesn't have the ability to shift or migrate around during transport.

Making versatility a key selling point, the SingleSpeed carries a large range of bikes, from 20-inch kids bikes all the way to gargantuan 29ers intended for cross-country racing. Another cool feature is the ability to carry bikes with tires up to 5 inches wide, meaning it'll secure everything from skinny road tires up to monstrous fat bike tires. It only weights 20 pounds, making it incredibly easy to take on and off, plus the wheel cup folds up when it's not in use to minimize the overall footprint on the back of your vehicle while parking and driving around the city.

  • Streamlined bike carrier for a single bike
  • Attaches to both 1.25 and 2-inch hitch receivers
  • Works with 20 to 29 in wheels, tires up to 5 in wide
  • StrongArm hook secures front wheel down without movement
  • Won't contact frame, making it suitable for carbon bikes
  • SKS bike lock for security, SpeedKnob locks rack itself
  • Wheel cup compactly folds up when it's not being used
  • Only weighs 20 lb for easy removal and installation

Does the job

Works well. Just wish it wasn't as far out as it is. I'd prefer both wheels being strapped and the frame locked as the suggested spot to secure the front tends to get loose so I have to push it on the front fork to make it secure. The security cable sometimes has difficulty going in and out but that's resolved when I move the arm around. My rack got wet and since then it's super squeaky and even some lubricant hasn't fixed but overall not bad. I think the build issues have been resolved as those reviews are from 2018

Great rack

I've had this rack since March 2019, and I love it. I have not had any issues with the wheel cup. On the contrary, the rack has been extremely sturdy and reliable and is a much better way of transporting my bike than taking the front wheel off and trying to fit it into the back seat.

Great with simple modification.

I've put it through the wringer

Before purchasing this rack I read plenty of reviews and noticed that there was one big issue with the rear wheel tray’s fastener not staying in, thus the wheel tray would fall off. Yakima did recalls for this and “fixed” the issue but some people still claimed to have issues. The rack’s design and functionality met my needs and I saw a simple solution to the problem at hand. I just replaced the stock fastener with a bolt and nylock nut and this rack has been a workhorse ever since. I needed a rack that would allow me constant and quick access to my hatchback without having to lower or swing a rack out of the way, and I needed something that could carry my full-suspension mtb, bmx, or road bike. This rack is certainly not without flaws, but it is sturdy and with a simple modification gets the job done. If you want something of equal or greater value, the Rocky Mounts is probably a better option considering that the Yakima isn’t 100% trustworthy out of the box. I just happened to get a great deal on this and it has worked well for me. I give it 4 stars because I never actually gave it the chance to fail on me before replacing the component, so the rack may have worked fine on it’s own, but would be contrary to nearly every bad review I read across the internet.

Serious Defect - Not Recommended

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I purchased this rack about a month ago, and conceptually it's great idea/product. The problem is with the pin that attaches the wheel cup to the rack. The pin is flimsy and can easily become dislodged. If that happens the wheel cup falls off the rack which, in turn, will eject the bike from the rack. Yakima issued a recall and promptly sent out a replacement pin. After following their instructions and installing it, I have found that the pin STILL becomes dislodged quite easily. Certainly it would come loose from the vibrations generated on the back of a car. I have absolutely no confidence in this rack and am quite certain that my bike will eject from the rack if I use it. I am currently working with Yakima to see what they can do to remedy the situation. Yakima is a quality company and I have every reason to believe they will somehow fix the situation for me. In the meantime I cannot recommend this rack. Once they adequately sort out the issue with the pin it will be a great product. Until then I suggest you spend your money on a different rack.

Thanks for calling this out David. Very sorry that the rack has not worked as advertised, but at least Yakima is working a solution for you.
