Why We Like The Yakima HoldUp EVO Hitch Rack

Yakima is renowned for building some of the toughest racks on the market with plenty of creature comforts to make carrying your gear as convenient as possible. Holding up to this function-driven design ethos, the Yakima HoldUp Evo Hitch Rack uses burly steel trays with folding wheel hoops that withstand thousands of miles on the road. Best of all, it's designed to fit nearly any bike wheel or tire size on the marketplace, accommodating those bikes with 20 to 29-inch wheels and tires up to 5 inches wide —including fat bikes.

Yakima's StrongArm hook secures firmly in place over your wheel and tire, so you won't have to worry about precious carbon frames coming into contact with the rack itself. Ratcheting straps loop around your rear wheels to keep the bike strapped down securely on the highway. The rack tilts out of the way with its KickStart foot pedal, so you can access your vehicle's rear hatch when both bikes are loaded and ready to go. Also, it folds up against the rear of your vehicle without the bikes in tow.

drops and breaks

Bought this in June. It is challenging to get the rear tire to lock in. I have had it come loose twice. The front tire strap also broke. Overall, very disappointed. Not worth the cost.

Bikes bikes bikes

Does the thing. I like the little built in lock to deter thieves, but I have a chunky chain lock I throw on if I'm leaving my bike more than a few minutes. Unfortunately, when you lower it down with bikes on, I can't fully open my trunk. It gets caught on the handlebars. But it opens enough to get most things out.

Easy to use, good value. Not modernized.

This is a solid rack that's easy to use and good bang for the buck. It has shown some rusting after 4 years of regular use, despite being cleaned and stored away in a dry place each winter. I purchased a new bike - 2021 Stumpjumper - and have found that its wheelbase is just a tick over the maximum that the rack is designed for (48"). This is pretty disappointing, considering a Stumpjumper has some of the most common trail bike geometry out there. As a result it doesn't sit level on the rack -- the rear wheel sits lower than the front despite being adjusted as far out as possible. Yakima should be designing racks that can accommodate modern trail bikes.

Worth every penny

Familiarity:

I had purchased this bike rack because I was tired of the cheaper ones with hooks and straps that damaged the back of a car. When I received this, I was not disappointed at all. This rack stayed in place perfectly, held the bikes securely, and handled bumpy roads and different terrains amazingly. And even when there were no bike in it, the option to fold it up nice and compact against the back of the car was the best. One of the first things I did to put this rack to the test was a cross-country trip to Utah and I never worried about the bikes or had to check on them at all. I even recently got rear ended on the highway, and this rack actually saved my car from damage. Unfortunately, the rack was damaged beyond use but it could have been so much worse. Even the bikes were okay. I am already planning on replacing it with another one when I have the money. Buy this rack, you will be so happy.
