Riding High

The Highroller is a great bike rack, especially for those of us who are tall. I bought this for my girlfriend for her birthday and at 5' 8" she occasionally has trouble getting the bike onto the rack on her Subaru Impreza. That being said the stability of this rack is incredible, a nice feature for those of us who are squeamish about putting a bike on the roof that is worth more than our car. The only complaint I have is that the lock on this thing is very minimal. It would seem that you could cut through it with a pocket knife and it isn't long enough to actually wrap around the frame of your bike and your roof rack. Other than that the rack is super stable and easy to use!

Awesome bike rack

    I got his as a gift for my brother and he is using it on his Honda Element. He loves it and uses it all the time.He says he has driven in some pretty bad weather with this and he has seen no damage to it at all. He tells me that this is very stable and the locking system is awesome. This is his favorite bike rack that he has owned thus far.

    This was purchased as more for occasional use, we use a hitch mount most of the time on our Tacoma with camper shell. We have used this enough to know that it works well, it is a little bulky but worth it not to have to take the front wheel off. No surprises during assembly other than the cable for the lock doesn't stow very well if you don't want to use it and you have to use it to lock the rack to the bars when you don't have a bike on it for theft reasons (you can remove the rack quickly when not in use).

    I've cycled through a couple roof mount yakima/thule bike racks and this is by far the most secure. The mechanism to lock the front wheel into place is well made and very intuitive. In addition the locking cable is sleek and easily stored, making it difficult for would be thieves to steal your bike.

    Treat your Bike

    I was previously using direct fork mount rails and decided to upgrade to the Highroller this year. Definitely an upgrade as the upright mount has some clear benefits over the direct mount. As the description suggests, not having to disassemble your bike or forget your wheel after that post-ride brewski(not fun or cheap) is a major plus for me. I was also concerned about the wear and tear of using direct mount rails, particularly at high speed and on bumpy dirt roads during bike trips. I've heard both sides to that theory, but having the upright rack gives me the piece of mind that my pride and joy is gonna be OK wherever I'm driving.

    The rack itself is easy to use, getting it locked in takes a matter of seconds. My bike has 650b wheels with extra wide rims and it fits in there just fine. Kind of bummed that for $200 a piece locks aren't included, but i guess that's where they get ya. All in all a good product though.

    So easy to put your bike into, fits a range of wheel sizes and has built in cables to lock up your bike! Its definitely the way to go for roof racks. the only thing is that the only way to lock the rack to your crossbar is to loop the cable around it because the rack mounts don't lock onto the bar.

    Can I use this in my truck bed?

    Nope. It's for mounting on a cartop using rails..

    Actually I did some research. You can definitely use this in a truck bed by using the Bedrock Tower System and Crossbars. FYI.

    Gets the job done

    I bought this rack after a serious amount of research and I'm not totally disappointed. The thing is easy to assemble and operate, but not perfect. On the product I received, the bottom swing arm ratchet doesn't catch at the low end so I've been forced to push my 26" wheel forward to the 29" setting. This allows the bottom arm to move higher and catch, giving the adjustable screw a chance to grip the tire. Not sure what I would do if I rode a 29er other than return it as I don't think I can MacGyver a fix given the plastic construction.

    This problem is most likely only an issue with the product I received, and not a design defect. For me, my next rack will be made by 1Up USA.

    I believe I have this same issue.. I had it set at 26" and when I tried to tighten the knob it just clicks once and doesn't really catch then the slightest pressure knocks it down rendering it useless. I will try the 29er setting and see if that works for me too.

    Jon, I have three of these and it happens to all of mine. All my families bikes are 29ers and I have to totally deflate the front tire and pull the front tire hard once it is in the rack to make it catch. What scares me is what if it gives way and does not latch or comes undone when riding on the highway!!!

    this is my second HighRoller - first one never gave me any trouble so when I needed another Roof top bike rack I looked at what's the latest & greatest and I saw nothing that rocked me . So here I am.... simple, fast and secure. Funky frames don't phase it.

    The Yakima High Roller bike rack is as good as it gets. I've used other brands in the past and they all fall short when compared to the High Roller. The bike is extremely stable and secure when driving on the highway or in a winding canyon. When demoing different size bikes, it took a matter of seconds to switch the rack to fit 26" or 29" size wheels. Until using this rack, I had no idea what a luxury it is to not have to remove the front tire. Not only does it keep the insides of my car clean, but I'm riding my bike in a matter of minutes when I get to the trail head since I don't have to dink around with putting my front tire on. The locking system is great and simple too. Yakima nailed it with this rack.

    Best way to go.

      I've had several mounts from yakima and Thule and this is my favorite so far. To address a couple issues below and add a few things in no particular order

      - Saves space in your car because you don't have to stash the rear wheel.

      - to put the bike on just roll it forward (or backwards if you installed the bike that way) and push the back lever up behind the rear of the front wheel. It ratchets up close to the position and the dial just finishes it off. The rear bar shouldn't be in the way of the dial or you're are doing it wrong.

      -Release tension with the know and then hit the button in the middle as a quick release and the rear arm falls down.

      -Locking the middle bike of 3 is hard, but I'm willing to guess stealing one from the middle is harder- not saying it can't happen thou. (Cables are weak locks - just a warning)

      - Aerodynamics are bad, but so is putting anything on the top of your car. Oh well.

      - The bikes do wiggle a bit but aren't going anywhere. Just follow the directions, no rallying and no serious offroading and you'll be fine.

      Decent rack, minor issues

      I have three of these rack trays on top of my Subaru Outback wagon. These is my third Yakima rack system and I have had numerous tray options over the years as well.

      I like:

      1) No need to remove wheels

      2) Adjusts to different wheel sizes

      3) Bike Lockability

      4) Does not scratch the bikes

      I do not like:

      1) Can be hard to get front wheel in the rack as rack adjustment knob is in the way

      2) Cable lock attachment does not move to alternate side

      3) Hard to load bikes towards middle of the car

      4) Bikes seem to flex around some

      5) Cannot handle bikes with front fenders

      I started out with one and purchased two more so the good points out weigh the bad.

      I use their core lock system so I can lock the base rack, carry trays, and bikes on the car. I have the two outside trays pointing forward with the middle one pointing backward. Since the bike locking cable always is attached on the same side (left) that means on the passenger side tray the lock is hard to reach and use because the lock is

      on the other side of the tray (I wish it could be swapped). It can be hard to get your front wheel in the tray as the big rack adjustment knob stops your bike from rolling forward on the tray. Personally because I do not trust rack adjustment knob from failing (letting the bike tip over) I always put an old toe strap around where it grabs the wheel (better safe than sorry).

        just bought a new mountain bike and this rack and i love that i dont need to take my front wheel off, one drawback is that this rack is not as aerodynamic as my other racks that require you to take your front wheel off.

        Does anyone know the length of the tray...

        Does anyone know the length of the tray from the front bar to the tail end? I'm concerned about interference with the hatch on my wagon.

        53" from the front crossbar to the rear of the wheel tray. I have NO problems with my Suburu Outback hatch.
