Byway 650b Plus Tire

Seeing the proliferation of adventure bikes and endurance rigs on the market, the trend-setting riders at WTB decided to make a line of plus-sized 650b tires that would replace traditional 700c tires for off-road exploration. Fulfilling this exploratory intention, the WTB Byway 650b Plus Tire offers a superb mix of bump compliance and grip when your rides consist of asphalt road approaches, fire road climbs, and jarring gravel grinds.

The 650b x 47-millimeter dimension is the same diameter as a 700c x 30-millimeter road tire, giving you the ability to swap this tire into your endurance or adventure rig, so long as you have an extra set of 650b wheels and clearance for a 47-millimeter tire. Tubeless casing gives you the ability to run lower pressure for a smoother ride that's not as jostling and bumpy on back roads, as well as self-sealing assurance when you're rolling over rocks and thorns that would normally cause a ride-ending flat.

The tread pattern on the Byway 650b Plus is perhaps its most valuable asset for rides that start on pavement, only to see a mixture of gravel, dirt, and light-duty singletrack along the way. The smooth centerline won't slow you down on the road, transitioning to a hatched diamond pattern for plentiful grip when you're grinding along dirt and gravel surfaces. Raised side knobs offer more grip for cornering on dirt, as well as durability for exploring off-road areas where rocks and sharp debris are common.

critical flaw in the construction

There is a flaw in the construction of these tires that makes them very difficult to set up tubeless and then unreliable once you get them out on the road. See my photo. For 3 TIRES IN A ROW, a line of bubbly sealant appeared near the bead, around the full circumference of the tire, and on both sides. This happened both at installation time and then later on after just 10 miles of riding. Backcountry was kind enough to replace the first tire that showed this problem. Then it happened with the replacement. Then it happened with the other tire from the original purchase. Forget it, these tires are going back. Why yes, I have indeed set up many other tubeless tires. Yes, I am aware that even tubeless-ready tires sometimes have imperfections that must be filled with sealant the first time the tire is installed. Yes, I tried shaking the tire and rotating it on its side. Yes, I am aware that more sealant might have helped. In fact it did. Until I rode on it. Or left it overnight in my hot garage. I don't have time for all that. I have three other brands of tires that were far easier and far more reliable to set up tubeless (Maxxis, Surly, Teravail). And in fact my WTB Horizons also show no such problem. Could you be more patient and make WTB Byways work for you? Maybe. I have better things to do, so I replaced the Byways with the Teravail Washburns, which honestly look to have a better-designed pattern anyway. (Comments refer to the Light/Fast Rolling Byways with Black sidewalls.)

Excellent B-Road/Light Gravel Tire

Echoing the sentiments of other reviewers - this is an excellent all-around tire that was only made better with the updated SG2 casing. They shine on the pavement as a supple and hard-wearing tire but reach their limits once the trail gets tough. I've found that the center tread loses traction easily in loose gravel and the side knobs aren't much better, but that might be asking too much of this tire. If you're in the market for a true gravel tire, WTB has better-suited options in the Sendero or Venture. If you're planning multi-surface trips or do lots of winter training with your gravel bike then the Byway is the tire for you!

Best Tire Ever

I've put it through the wringer

After 1000s of miles I've got to say this is one of my favorite tires of all time. They're not the lightest or most supple or fastest rolling but unlike some fancier tires they've got really good durability while still rolling nicely. On gravel tires you always have to consider how much time you'll actually be on gravel versus pavement and this is one of those that works equally well on both. I commute daily on these and the ride is very comfortable, maybe not as fast as other tires but then I hop onto a dirt track and the tires roll just as nicely. They're not a mountain tire but all things considered the only time I really find them lacking off road is when they lose traction on cheap climbs. But I've bombed through sharp lava rock gardens on jeep trails and they've shrugged all that off. And for icing on the cake, tan wall tires always look good on gravel bikes!

Great, durable, tractiony

Over 1000 miles on them so far, everything from VT gravel to rocky MTB trails i've been shocked at how stable they are. Great for winter road rides, too. Regularly ride them around 20-25 psi but up to 35-40 when there's more pavement. Excellent if you ride a lot of rough trail, but they're definitely overkill for most gravel- makes climbing veeery slow.

Smooth and Grippy WTB tire

I got this tire for winter riding on my commuter bike. Pros - The tire fits exactly like I expected - the center profile rides smooth and fast - the edge tread is great for gripping in snow and on ice Cons - None Yet
