Why We Like The GTR Team Disc 105 Road Bike

With the help of the Wilier GTR Team Disc 105 Road Bike we too can rack of miles comfortably and quickly aboard this performance-focused endurance bike. Though we might not know much about Italian roads, we do know that the mountainous region has people longing for endless miles. The GTR is specifically designed for those of us who aren't so much into racing as we are into epic grand fondo's and miles of smiles. The bike uses decades of Wilier's engineering prowess to deliver a platform that's both comfortable and responsive no matter how epic the ride may be.

Disc brakes are new to the road world and to the GTR, but we can attest that we've asked our mountain biking friends and they've never gone back to rim brakes. Disc brakes improve stopping power and feel consistent all the way until it's time to change out our pads. The brakes also allow for more room for tires, and the GTR is compatible with up to 28mm tread to keep us rolling smooth down the road. If we ever do feel like racing, the GTR comes out of the box UCI legal for all our biggest racing events.

Kit on this version of the GTR makes us lucky enough to enjoy the stellar Shimano trickle down 105 technology. The full drivetrain is Shimano 105 including the impressively performing hydraulic disc brakes. 105 runs just as smooth as its Ultegra and Dura-Ace counterparts but without the big price penalty. A 50/34T chainring is outfitted on the GTR and this pairs nicely with the 11-30T cassette out back. For the mountains we'll be climbing, it's nice to know that Wilier specs almost a 1:1 gear ratio on the GTR.

Wheels are provided by Shimano as well with the RS171's providing a smooth rolling wheel to get moving on. Though these wheels aren't the fanciest, they do offer a great package at a performance-minded price point. Tires are the Vittoria Zaffiro Pro's, these tires stick to the pavement when they need to but roll smooth and fast everywhere else. Selle Italia offers the saddle and this premium brand knows how to make a comfortable platform to get the miles in on.

The Willier frame weight comes in at a truly impressive 3.4lbs and provides us with a featherlight machine to get rolling on. With its 28mm tire clearance and thru-axle configuration, we're confident knowing that this machine is built for the future and all our big riding endeavors. The Wilier GTR seems purpose-built to take on the local grand fondos and relish when just a bit of gravel is thrown in as well.

This bike was hard to find in stock in the US. Probably due to the pandemic and price point. The build by Competitive Cyclist was rock solid, well packaged and shipped quickly. Definitely will buy another bike from them. I rode this frame up Alpe d'Huez and liked it so much I wanted my own. It is quick and responsive and feels comfortable over the bumps. It wants to descend faster. Haven't pushed that yet. The Shimano components are bulletproof of course. The wheels add the weight but are sturdy and solid for training and regular recreational riding so not so interested in an upgrade. Thru axles are so much better then quick release. Like disk brakes, never going back. Been riding it for about a month. Against my better judgment, I chose the red/white frame. Never again. It is very pretty but the paint seems fragile snd rubbing off due to cable rub. I always pick black frames. So easy to touch up. Live and learn. I have covered the down tube, seat tube, chain stays and cable rub areas with black electrical tape. Hmm. This bike will definitely need some helicopter tape but satisfied so far with my purchase. Used it for several months. Seems comparable in size to my med/large Giant TCX.
